I don't think I would consider myself a huge Trekkie, and certainly not since I don't say "Trekker", but I have been a sort of fan since childhood. Way back in the '70s syndicated TV was the big deal. We had a real kickass TV station in the Seattle area Channel 11. Saturdays and Sundays were Star Trek at 6 PM. Sundays at noon were cool, too, because they had a "SciFi" movie block. Anyways, I grew up watching TOS on Channel 11. I had heard about this stuff before but for some reason last night I pulled up these:

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men - This was really neat because I just happened to rewatch Star Trek - The Motion Picture. Boring. Not as bad as when I was a kid and actually boring with a purpose. But, still, hard to maintain interest for two hours. This "fan movie" with some of the original actors has a better tempo. Not perfect but worth the time.

Star Trek: Phase II - Wow. If you like the original series, this is awesome. As the episodes progress you can tell a definite increase in acting ability and production as well. They link directly to torrents of the DVDs as well as videos. Good stuff.

Star Trek The Animated Series - The Animated Adventures of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek (1973) - This is something else cool. As a kid I have only vague memories of this on TV. It's a little more expensive than when I ordered it (grammar question: should I have used "than" or "then", and why?) but still cheap considering.

Also, right now all of TOS actor movies are on watch it now at netflix. Also, the latest reboot. Not sure about all of the TNG movies without double checking.

Saw this post, expected talk of TNG, was disappointed.

Talk about it then. I like TNG quite abit. After the awkward beginning.

Interesting, me liked.

I used to watch the animated series as a kid. I have some sort of recollection of there being 2 episodes of TOS on some mornings on BBC2 followed by an episode of the animated thing. :D
nope.

Thanks for the post. Didnt know some of this stuff existed. After looking around I saw Star Trek: Of Gods and Men is available to watch online @ http://startrekofgodsandmen.com/main/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=127

Sadly I'm not impressed, its missing the magic somehow. Not to mention the special effects are pretty bad, although maybe on purpose as a homage to original series.

I just watched the new one last night. Would've been a decent movie without all the lens flares and shaking camera. I almost couldn't believe it wasn't a joke.

Funny, I just watched a couple episodes of Voyager. I'm a big fan of TNG and Voyager.

Yeah, all that stuff is online. The wikipedia articles link to the official sites. I disagree about the effects, though, considering they are fan films I think they did a pretty amazing job in both of these projects. I noticed that there are other Star Trek fan films discussed at wikipedia. Maybe there are some other decent ones available as well.

Yeah, that's pretty silly but it was okay. My biggest problem with it is using the silly time travel gimmick yet again to basically illustrate that the writers weren't capable of producing anything new and noteworthy.

I'm really excited for the next one, assuming it builds on the lore of this. The actors carried the first, and hopefully a decent story can expand things in the second. I really appreciated the shallow depth of field I criticized the trailer for, it really let the actors show off, even if they were imitating well trained actors' established characters.

Uh, no? The new one used time travel as an excuse to reboot the entire franchise, which will gave them a ton of freedom to do whatever new and noteworthy things in that very same movie, in addition to future movies.

Sure, and reuse characters already developed over 30 years ago and disregard all previous material with the theoretical exception of Enterprise. I mean, they clearly weren't confident enough to develop a new crew. They wanted the security of taking a favorite one and "rebooting" it. I enjoy the film but creating a "parallel universe" so that they can recycle old ideas is a cop out.

I think rebooting it was less of a cop out and just creating a new crew.

I mean the original series timeline is much more interesting than any of the other 4 programmes and who the hell wants to know about the voyages of the USS Excelsior? :P
nope.
2010-09-09, 5:18 PM #16
I mostly agree. They could have done a B or C show. I also would have liked a "reboot" of sorts where they basically just used the new version of the old crew in stories set in the existing universe. I think all but the nerdiest trekkies would agree that much of the "cannon" of the first series is rendered obsolete when you try to put it literally in context with newer shows.

I thought the whole "time travel" in the new Star Trek made the movie much more convoluted than it needs to be. I enjoyed when the characters of the crew met and interacted with each other, but I expected the film to be about the first mission into the unknown, working as a team or whatever. The whole "old Spock meets new Spock" past-present paradox plot felt like it overshadowed the whole dynamic of the cast, and in the end didn't pay off (except in fan-service?).

The way some of you are complaining I'd almost think you'd never heard of reboot movies before.

In seventeen posts there haven't been a whole lot of complaining about the new film but I dislike reboots in general. There are way too many reboots and remakes substantiating my view that many films that make it to production suffer from a lack of creativity.

So I finally watched all of the episodes and all I can say is, wow, if you are any sort of a fan of Star Trek you should watch these. It starts off a little shaky and you have to do a little extra suspension of disbelief with regards to seeing new, amateur actors play classic roles but the production value and acting gets better with each episode. To me it peaked at Episode 3. The following two parter was good but they over did the "gay" subplot, in my opinion. I mean, I got it, they love each other, we don't need more gay hugging and kissing than all the hetero hugging and kissing from the entire franchise combined. Great appearances by Trek actors from major to minor as well. Effects are very good.

Go to the wikipedia article and find the link to the official site. From there you can find the downloads and torrents. Better yet, here you go (click on smiley). :)

So, speaking of Star Trek stuff, who here has played the Elite Force games? I finished the first one years ago and I decided to start the second one last night. It's expensive as hell now on Amazon so I chose an alternate way to get the game.

If you've never heard of or played these games they are were fairly well regarded FPS games when they were released. The first one takes place on Voyager and the original cast reprise their roles. The second takes off at the very end of Voyager and then moves to Enterprise-E. Far fewer original cast members but Patrick Stewart is there at least. Too bad both of these games are so expensive to buy right now. They really are top notch as far as Star Trek games go (although it could be said that that isn't saying much).

Elite Force was a great game. Both multiplayer and singleplayer were enjoyable.

I've always maintained that Hee Haw: The Next Generation was a far superior show.

2 is one of the worst gaming experiences i have ever had, 1 was one of the best

So on my journey through Elite Forces 2 I'm on a quest to find all the secrets. You pretty much have to use gamefaqs type guides because some are just stupid. Anyway, I was just shocked by one of the strangest minigame-easter eggs I've seen pop up in a game. Kind of the same sort of shock I remember with the easter egg in our DF level, Condition Red. Anyway, here's a youtube.

That is a really strange one. I think I fell after about the 2nd jump, though. :( There is a secret area during one of the in-between bits on the Enterprise where you get into a back room that has plywood for walls and what looks like a couple of washing machines in there.

It was trying to hard at first to be like TOS. Alien species scantily clad in roman toga-like garb, primitive cultures that frequently engage in single combat to the death, etc. Once it found it's own footing, it got a lot better.
2010-09-12, 8:07 PM #29
I can't who said it (perhaps spe?), but TNG got a lot better "when they all started wearing uniforms with collars".

So I've been working my through the original cast movies. Watched 3 and 4 most recently and I noticed something.

By the way, don't search for "Nichelle Nichols Jerry Curl" images on Google. Well, maybe Vin might want to.

You know what's hilarious is that this kind of goes with Snoops :tinfoil: thread about Google. I was in no way searching for things related to many of those images. Now, I have pretty thick skin (thighs and midsection too for that matter) so it doesn't bother me but if google images operated with a similar instant function you can see why some filtering of the results could be necessary.
