I hate crafting now... (TF2 thread)
2010-09-17, 7:02 AM #1
So, yesterday, I manage to muster up 3 required metals to craft myself a new hat. I like hats, and I don't play enough to get my full 6-7 items a week. So when I finally get enough metals to make a hat, it's a big deal.

Anyway, so I have 4 hats (aside from the halo, gibus, paper sack, and soldier-worms item). I've got the Trophy Belt, Prussian Pickelhaube, Mining Light, and Demoman's Fro.

Four hats... I crafted a duplicate of the Mining Light. *sigh*

My odds in this game are always against me it seems. Anyway, if they ever put trading in, anyone want to trade it? Or is there anything I can do with useless hats?

If you get 2 useless hats, you can craft them to make 1 new hat.
2010-09-17, 7:18 AM #3
I don't think I could bring myself to combine two hats, considering how much metal it costs. I'd almost rather wait until there's legitimate trading.

Crafting? Hats? TF2? I didn't think it has been that long since I played, but I guess it has. You can still, umm, shoot people right?

Of course you still shoot people. Who else are you going to show your hats off to?

Also, just for amusement, 2fort in a nutshell:

That wasn't amusing whatsoever. :colbert:

For those of us that don't play that often or pay attention to the blogs, do the hats actually do or are they just so you can be "Oh look, I have a hat."?
nope.

:psyduck:

And the hats look pretty. That's it.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Yeah, they just make your character look different. The only benefit I have found is sometimes on servers with friends it's easier to spot the friend from a greater distance without actually pointing directly at them.

I'm waiting for the Polycount hats to come out before I craft a hat. I have enough to make one class-specific hat, and I want it to count. I really want the Bonk! Helm though. But, we shall see. New hats AND a trading system... hopefully within the next month.

So in other words, not that much different than the original 2fort, in which you also had excessive sniper domination.

Well, the original TFC 2fort had conc/nade jumping which allowed players to navigate bases more freely, and people had grenades to help deal with sentry farms easier.

I like TF2 and TFC equally, but I have to say I had better times in TFC 2fort than "turtle-central" TF2 2fort.

I REALLY think this comes down to teams, though. The 24/7 2fort servers I play on are usually wildly varied throughout the round. Having more than one medic makes the game a lot easier, and if both teams can manage ubers there's always a decent power struggle.

Also, when I can't find team mates to help with sentries, the demoman is just a click or two away. I can't use him for snot in battle, but if the engie keeps building in the same spot even one guy can turn the tables as a demo.

Aw hell no. It just makes the sniping worse. You kill them and they're back in 3 seconds. I have literally headshotted someone, fully charged my gun back up, and they were already coming back onto the battlements. :carl:

tf2 doesn't have class restrictions?

i remember most tfc servers would limit snipers to only 2 people per side to avoid problems.
2010-09-18, 11:31 AM #16
Some servers do and I hate that so much. I understand why its in place, but sometimes the person playing as sniper sucks and they refuse to change classes.

I'm somewhat good at sniper, so I don't really experience the kinds of problems you're talking about CoolMatty. Rarely does a sniper kill me while I'm another class on that map because I come out of the battlements dodging them, but if they do it's as easy as switching to sniper and at least dancing around the battlements long enough for your team to move up, if not sniping them back until they try another location or class.

Also, I like to use the long shot of the demoman and lob stickies on their embattlement and then sticky jump over to it while simultaneously killing their sniper, then destroying the hayroom sentries. The classes are so diverse that TF2 is one of the only games where I don't feel helpless when someone is obviously better than me.

ctf_turbine is a much better CTF map, imo. If your team works together enough, you can secure the main room and build useful sentries/equipment. You get better rewarded for teamwork and advancing, unlike the bridge in 2fort which just gets bombarded by spam. Not to mention, turbine has MUCH more elbow room.

Well obviously you don't play on a 2fort server with good snipers. Good ones will nail you coming off the battlements every time. And they won't give you the chance to launch stickies across the battlements. And they'll snipe you through the bridge too. This is why I hate that map. Any other at least gives you decent cover.

Agreed, Turbine is one of my fav CTF maps.

Turbine always seems more like what you guys are describing, and relies way too much on good spies.

Not true, you can shoot stickies from behind the left side, and there's even a hole on the right side if you know what you're doing. If you absolutely cannot get out of the battlements toss a sticky right in front of the middle doorway as if to sticky-jump from there, then from the safe area Charge-stickey-jump or double-sticky-jump with the Scottish Resistance and you'll move too fast for them. The same can be done even easier with a soldier, but I am terrible at rocket-jumps. Oh, and you can sticky-jump from behind the left normally.

If you're talking about getting sniped while in the air, go sewers and sticky-jump from there and then to the battlements on their left.

Most servers I play on consider that an exploit since it's not balanced for both sides, and will kick and/or ban you for doing that. Not to mention it would literally take ages to get enough stickies to kill a sniper doing that.

Good ones will chest shot you as soon as you jump, or just wait for you to land with your 20 hp remaining and knife you.

Keep in mind I play on 24/7 2fort servers where each side has ~3 snipers who do nothing but snipe every day. They will brutalize even a good sniper oftentimes. And since the battlements is ridiculously easy for snipers to protect themselves, literally the only threat is other snipers. Thus begins the mass sniper crap.

Also, going sewers is fine if you can manage to make it with enough HP to sticky jump. A rare thing, since you have to remember there ARE other people playing. Besides, demomen are horrible in water.

You haven't learned the trick yet? Just wait until some moron goes in front of you, there's plenty of time after your teammate gets popped for you to make your run for it.

Turbine is better, but 2Fort is a great map if the teams are even.

I do do that, but it's still hard when the other team has 3 snipers :P

2fort is nothing but stalemates. An even team is like, the worst outcome in that map. It's not so much a problem on other maps.

I disagree. I've had many matches where both teams have quality defenses, and great offenses. Eventually someone messes up. Scouts are key in that sense, they keep those coming updated on what's happening up front. Since most 'good' teams only need 2 engineers to run a 2fort defense (having a pyro around is nice as well), it's not too hard to get through. I think the worst thing about the map is getting out with the intel. Demos can dominate exits.

I think spiral should lead directly into the grate room with the same door facing spawn for that very reason. If I set up a dispenser in the spiral entrance, just to the left so it can't be seen (but can still be blown up), scouts and even careless soldiers/demos have an impossible time getting in and out. If there's a demo, as you mentioned, it almost feels like cheating.

Personally, I don't think there should be an intel direction arrow. Where the intel is should be part of team communication. I do however think there should be a timer on the HUD for how long until red/blu's intel returns. (I'm aware some servers have this.)

This would help with the demo problem to an extent.

The real problem is you can set up a sentry right there at the corner of the spawn door. Combine that with the dispenser wall, and you have an engineer who is capable of completely stopping anyone who tries to go after the intel.

Even if someone ubers and blows your stuff up, you can typically get a sentry down again before they manage to make it back out with said intel.

And in cases where that doesn't happen, your teammates would have to be sitting with their thumbs up their butts to not stop it themselves.

Finally, god help you if they have TWO engineers.

Actually, if you Double Jump+FAN, or rocket/sticky jump into the grate, you can usually make it into the door to the left (provided there's no dispenser) before the turret will turn around to blast you.

That is if I'm thinking of where you're talking about putting a sentry correctly.

A. The sentry will be aimed in that direction.
B. That's why you put a dispenser there.
C. Even if it was facing the wrong way, only a scout could make it through there. And a scout is a dead man if your team is competent. (Not to mention that sentry is going to kick his ass when he tries to leave with it)
