Can anyone help identify this spider for me? I barely dare ask since it's a very ****ty photo taken on my ****ty phone... But any general ideas?

I've never seen one this big around these parts (Western Europe, end of a pretty hot Summer). No web seen, didn't see it walking (vacuumed it :psyduck:)

The yellow border which it is sitting on is exactly 6 centimetres (=2.4 inches). Meaning its body is about 2.25cm (=0.9 in).

I know this isn't much to go on, but help is appreciated.

I vote Loxosceles reclusa.

I'm being at least semi-serious.

I'd say a vibrating spider or house spider. Its body seems to small to be a wolf, which is my next guess.

I'm hoping it's not this one, but I'll be treating the next big one I see like it is Loxosceles. (ie vacuum-superpower activated)

Spider's aren't pests, they eat the pests.

The large spiders you most often find running around your house (in the UK anyway) tend to be from the Tegenaria genus. I'm thinking of Tegenaria domestica and Tegenaria gigantea in particular. It looks too substantial to be the cellar spider.

They've been causing the most squealing amongst the housemates in my flat lately as the males are wandering around looking for the ladies. If you do catch it; you can tell if its male if it has swollen pedipalps (like a short 5th pair of legs at the front), they'll look like mini boxing gloves.

Hey Recusant, are you also into the Spider Man comics and movies?
