This should probably go in the showcase forum.

Wow, really detailed and painstaking job, but I'd like to see you work on a map that didn't initially suck already.

Wow, it's even blindingly full-bright as well.

I think you captured the essence of JHS well.

I agree that JHS sucked, but it certainly had mass appeal, I'm sure it was the all time most popular JK addon map on zone.com so porting it specifically does make a certain kind of sense. I can't open the links now on my cell phone, but I'm sure playing this would have me in a buzz of nostalgia even though it was rare to catch me playing JHS in the first place. Also I'm quite curious about console games having a decent level editor, an all too infrequent of a feature to see!

BTW, I'm sure a major reason for JHS' success was that a good chunk of the target audience was in high school at the time.

Oh, I wonder if PedHead approves of this porting.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

JHS did suck but was oddly fun. It wasn't actually good but it was entertaining with silly mods.

At least JHS didn't kill my computer, and my computer was horrible for the time and couldn't run a lot of addon levels stably.

I used to throw thermal detonators through the basketball goals in the gym with my friends. :awesome: Hahaha - Level looks really nice, it's too bad the whole thing has a metallic feel, they should allow you to use shapes and then choose the texture yourself.

JHS was only fun with KWP

I never actually played JHS, but the Forge is pretty slick. I hope Bungie decides to open up more of "Forge World" because users are limited by the terrain features (or lack thereof).

Yeah forge world kind of pisses me off in that regard.

@Liberius I spent only 2ish hours on the map, it's pretty crummy. not accurate, but I had to try!

@Krokodile it's not a wonderful map editor, you can't really "map", just construct metallic objects(for the most part). the JHS work in progress is actually finished as I can't add anything to it because I ran out of "budget". I was going to credit PedHead if I could have finished and published it, but alas. most of the interior is nonexistant!

one of my favorite levels in JK MP was "Naboo" by Ortheza. I spent about 7 - 9 hours working up a map inspired by his, but nowhere near as big or awesome.

That BGJ is outstanding, and Naboo is one of the maps I had in mind when I made my other post. I'd love to see Oasis.

JHS has plenty of redeeming qualities. People who think the game is all about visual beauty like to pretend it isn't much more fun than their own levels.

Why would we think JK levels are all about visual beauty? Also I fully recognize that JHS is a lot more fun and also better than Backup Base, but maybe your theory applies in a general sense even though I doubt that too.

Disregarding the visuals (and also excusing them, to an extent, due to the age), JHS is badly off-scale in relation to the walkplayer, and the design from what I remember of it, probably based on an actual HS (I can't remember the level description), is dreadful and not thought out too far I'm sure.

JHS' greatest merit, in addition to its popularity, is that PedHead is a better person than that ******* BeefCaike.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I don't know... in the OP he mentioned something about a level by Ortheza... I remember that dude made a level that had some spectacularly awesome lighting.

There's a bunch of levels made by people with a good sense of aesthetics, but JK was uglier than something like Quake II, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were more limited as well (particularly before the unofficial patches) but I hope someone who knows more about editing JK's contemporaries will confirm or deny this.

I mainly wanted levels to make sense in their design (thoughtful item placing, logically connected areas, appropriate scale etc.), anyway.

I really wish you could use textures, it just looks like crap to me.
2010-09-28, 5:19 AM #23
Aloyisus, The BGJ map actually looks pretty accurate. Not doubting your skills here, i just didn't expect it to be that on. As for the Naboo map, it looks pretty fine itself. Are those forcefields just in there for visuals or do they have a practical use in the map?

There were some limitations, yes; although we still discovered 16-bit textures and how to do large-scale terrain. I always found JK to be surprisingly versatile in the sheer variety of looks it could achieve; and though it required a lot of effort, highly skillful people could create beautiful things with it. I think the barrier for entry was just higher.

@JediKirby you can't use/create water, so Oasis would look pretty silly.. and I doubt I remember it well enough. =\

@Liberius I've never made/recreated any maps before these, so I don't really have skills, haha(Although I always wanted to make a JK one when it was in its heyday!). The forcefields are one-way. you can walk into the core, but not back out. I assume it would give a "Fight to the death" mentality, but I added a teleporter about 3/8 of the way down the pit that you have to fall into just right to hit. takes you back to where the hangar would be in the original level(really just a small boxed room in this one). kind of like a secret on a JK level, right? =D I'd like to play these maps with people, but the truth is nobody really plays custom games in halo. these maps are just for my own amusement.

That's why I haven't spent a lot of time in the Forge. If you come up with a good one, though, I'm sure we could get a decent sized Massassian game going.

I'd imagine there's an option to share/suggest the maps to friends? If so, you should check out the gamertag thread.

Also, in case you or anyone else didn't realize, you can add and delete friends directly through xbox.com instead of dealing with it through the dashboard.
