My new phone doesn't come with a ring tone that sounds like a phone. Apparently I have to pay extra for that now. I can get the verizon "jingle" for free though.

"jingle" it is....

Find a recording of a telephone ringing. Convert to mp3. Make ringtone.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

now i don't know about how they are with the newest phones but verizon used to cripple just about every phone by disabling various features like usb file transfers

of course one could always undo verizon's asshattery so they can have decent ringtones

of course my phone always had an old school telephone ring

Who in the world pays for ringtones?

Or download one of the many default "phone ringing" mp3s off the internet and send it to yourphonenumber@vzwpix.com
.

You got the Droid X, right? I had to look for a while, but I found something that approximates a phone ring for my Incredible, and a simple "beep" for incoming text messages.

My EVO came with 4 modern standard sounding ringtones, and an old phone tone. That's in addition to the 25 other goofy ones. Sounds like its Verizon being stupid as usual.
2010-09-28, 4:27 PM #10
Good god. Even with an iPhone it's possible to create ringtones from audio files for free.
2010-09-28, 4:33 PM #11
I have never heard my phones ringtone, always on vibrate

I believe Chris Rock put it best, 'The phone companies are going to buy the ring-tone companies, and then they're going to sell you phones that don't ring.'

I have verizon, and I have several choices of stupid jingles and normal sounding rings...
DO NOT WANT.

I never have my phone on ring... always on vibrate. Makes it that much easier to ignore.

This is HORRID! Your cell phone didn't come with a ringtone you like? How dare they.

Yea, I was surprised when I figured this out on my iPhone. They even have apps that will do it for you now.

Find a normal phone ring online, record it with audacity if its not avaliable for download s an mp3, then send it to your phone via email mms. for example if your number was all 5's it would be "5555555555@vzwpix.com"
2010-09-29, 5:48 AM #20
This is the smartphone era, and assuming that you're using one, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get any sound file you want on that device working as a ringtone.

That's what I did, though with not really having a plan to cover mms, it may have not been worth it. Still, I got a ringtone that sounds both like a phone AND is from a video game (Link's Awakening).

I have some stupid flip phone from motorola, I didn't get the droid because my job decided to cut the $$ they cover for smart phone plans. I don't want to be annoyed with email on my phone anyway. If someone has something important to tell me, CALL ME. (never happens)

If email was the only reason I had my smartphone I wouldn't have one either. I use mine primarily for interwebs, GPS and Pandora. And I find it well worth the money for those reasons.

It's coming up, coverage still is spotty in areas. Speeds are insane though. I got 7.5mbps down, 1mbps up in my car last week.

I hate smartphones, but, unfortunately, it looks as though I am going to be required to get one for work :( :( :(

Really? I don't think I know anyone who doesn't have one. The only person I know that doesn't have a smart phone works as a waiter at a nearby restaurant and is bumming couch time at my house because he can't live with his parents anymore. Even I'm getting tired of the guy.

I prefer not to use e-mail on my phone, but most of the other typical smart phone apps are nice. Turn-by-Turn, or Google Maps. Microsoft Word/Excel. Better web-browsing. Pandora, Youtube, and of course, Games for when on the toilet at work :D. Not to mention I used to run my laptop tethered to my phone for internet. Oh, and at one time, I had it functioning as an NES rom box.

I don't think I'd ever need or want any of that on my phone. I barely use it as a phone.
nope.

That's promising..Yeah I hear the same thing around here, some parts of downtown during certain times of the day you can get it but I've yet to go hunting, worried it's going to kill battery life. (I opted for the Galaxy/Epic)

I barely use mine as a phone either. But in addition to what he said, I even use mine as xbmc remote, a camera, instant messaging client, remote desktop, identifying music I'm hearing, etc.

I wouldn't use any of that either apart from the camera. :P
nope.
