-my friend's gchat status

I know nothing about star trek or that game (minecraft?) but that looks cool and ridiculous. Reminds me of blockland shenanigans.

although I just bought Borderlands cuz it was $7.50 ... haven't played it yet but my friend also got it so I may get addicted to it soon, in which case I may look into other games and end up getting minecraft

Also, it really bugs me that he feels it's absolutely necessary to make the camera view bounce in time with the syllables he's speaking.

Perhaps he has no hands, and accomplished this entire thing controlling the mouse with his face.

That enterprise is amazing. Most of my close friends play minecraft, but I just can't get into it. Maybe it's that I haven't had time lately or that I just don't get the appeal, but I plan on digging in to that and The League over christmas break.

Yeah, that was pretty awesome. Minecraft has a level editor, right? It's not as if he went around placing all those blocks?

I think the level editor IS the game, Emon.

The thing is, I always thought if you are going to be this involved in designing interactive game worlds like this, you would just pick up a map editor for a game and do away with limits. But I'm guessing, like as Little Big Planet and Minecraft shows, people tend to be more creative and passionate when working under radical constraints. Same goes for those folks using Jedi Knight to make projects instead of using an infinitely better engines with better tools.

I know it's the game, but there's some process of editing things that isn't placing blocks right? That's what the enterprise guy was talking about. Feeding in bitmaps or something to the editor.

Minecraft ~= blockland.
error; function{getsig} returns 'null'
2010-09-30, 4:57 AM #15
People have written tools for it, yes. I'd expect the enterprise there was generated from a 3d model or a series of bitmap slices.

I wish blockland were still around as it was back in the day. I remember playing with a bunch of you, building a big mansion in a bedroom or something.

Yes there are methods of importing things into minecraft, I don't think they are easy/perfect though.

This game, is oddly addicting. Can't wait for MP survival.

Ahhhh, in the video Jon posted, I was just waiting for 6 minutes for the guy to insert some humor... because it's funny! Especially with the critters running around on it, so I laughed out loud when he said "Are you listening, pig?" and repeated what he just said.

I think he was talking about textures. I'm pretty sure all of these things were built in-game...

There is a mode where you don't have to harvest materials, you can just have an infinite amount of them. I'm sure they used that.

Yes, there's an editor. Apparently that's how the guy made the ALU, and I was sad when I heard it because that makes it flat-out unimpressive as ****.

What? I'm happy. The people who do stuff like this aren't the ones causing problems.

Why did you post that in the form of a tweet or facebook status update?

I personally feel that unless you are a doctor or have several published books, the expression "someone has too much time on their hands" shouldn't be in your vocabulary. And even then.

You know who else had a hobby? Hitler, and it was killing Jews.

You need to get a hobby. One that doesn't involve being a jackass on the Internet.

Speaking of hobbies

Hitlers hobby was really painting....

As was Churchill's, interestingly.

I'm too burned out on Blockland to give this one a chance.

So what you're saying is that Churchill gassed the Jews?

Must have been all the beans he ate.
