Your laptop is outdated in 2 months as well. Technology progresses, get over it. Besides, it's not exactly a stretch to keep a smartphone for 2 years easy, and with subsidization every two years you're always current.
Besides the fact that smartphones have the best implementation of texting, and have excellent phone capabilities... just because YOU rarely use it for anything else (likely because your phone CAN'T do anything else), doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.
My laptop doesn't fit in my pocket and go everywhere I do.
Common uses for smartphones:
1. GPS navigation
2. GPS-powered location searches (movies, restaurants, foursquare, weather, product searching, etc)
3. Streaming music/video, such as Pandora.
4. Google, and the web in general.
5. Email
6. Far better contact integration, with Facebook, Twitter, Exchange, IM services, Calendar, etc.
7. Games

8. Camera
And then some more novel uses that I do on a regular basis:
1. Control my XBMC wirelessly.
2. Remote Desktop.
3. Wireless tethering for my laptop when there's no internet around.
4. Dropbox
5. Document editing (Word, Excel, etc)
6. Shazam (seriously, has anyone else used this? It's amazing. It listens for 15 seconds, and tells you the name of whatever song it's able to hear. Even works fairly well in loud bar scenarios)
7. Synced notes
8. Emulators and Flash video for entertainment on the go
If none of that interests you at all or seems worthwhile, well, good for you. The rest of us will embrace the future
