You can't make an MMO with Jedi Knight.

eeeh... are you totally sure? i heard that modifyng sith engine (jedi knight engine) is easier as hell so if it uses c++ and c+ languages why not?
2010-10-07, 12:03 PM #6
Sith was written in C, and uses a custom scripting language called COG for game logic. It's easy to modify most things that are within the design of the engine. Supporting hundreds or thousands of players isn't possible because it was never designed to do that.

Also there's no language called C+.

You can't modify the engine, the source has never been released. Not to mention if you really want to do something like that you'd be better off writing your own engine from scratch (it would be much easier too).

You can modify the game resources, which is called modding, but editing the engine is not possible.

Even if you COULD make an MMO with Jedi Knight, writing an MMO is a massively huge project that takes mainstream developers many years and millions of dollars to develop. Even if you managed to overcome those problems, no one would want to play it anyway because no one cares about Jedi Knight anymore.

A better idea, someone should make a Jedi Knight Minecraft mod. Jedi Knight in the Minecraft game. I mean, if JK can't upgrade, it CAN downgrade right? Guys? Right?

Someone should recreate JK in Doom or Wolf3D.
My favorite JKDF2 h4x:
EAH XMAS v2
MANIPULATOR GUN
EAH SMOOTH SNIPER

At least the latter wouldn't be a problem, seeing as the community is going on a lot stronger than Massassi has been for like 7 years.

It's refreshing to see a new poster who isn't a spambot! Everyone gets silly ideas, stick around will you!
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

BTW I'm really happy about the replies. You guys have been helpful, especially Emon, by saying it's not going to work and explaining exactly why, without being jerks.

If there is one thing massassi is good at, shooting down ideas. Though I see where everyone is coming from I mean seriously a MMO for JK? Sounds like a joke. If you really wanted to build a MMO you wouldn't use the JK engine, it's simply not made for that as stated.

The idea was a great one, just one that can't be executed. Don't feel bad, and as others said, feel free to stick around ;)

People would play a JK MMO, look at Spring and Quakelive, 10-12 year old games. The hangup is the vast work involved in getting it to that point.
2010-10-08, 7:09 AM #31
Yes, 35 people would play it.

So technically it wouldn't be a "massively multiplayer online" game. Not even a semi-massively multiplayer online.

Intimately Multiplayer Online - IMO

I think 35 is vastly underestimating the number of people on the internet who frankly haven't anything better to do. It's worth pointing out you have 25,000+ posts on a forum for a dead video game, some of which involve discussing whether a JK MMO (which is 100% technologically impractical) would work. :)
2010-10-08, 5:41 PM #36
Someone direct port JK to the Q3 engine, I'm at a loss to why this hasn't been done yet.
2010-10-08, 6:06 PM #37
GHORG, games like Quake Live are a success because Quake 3 was a massive wide spread hit. JK wasn't.

Because they're two completely different game engines based on completely different technologies, and because it would be shut down the second it looked like it might actually get released.
2010-10-08, 6:51 PM #39
Yeah but aside from that is there any good reason? >_>

Because there are four people on Massassi who are capable of doing it, and we all have lives.
