Chrome URL Completion
2010-10-13, 3:44 PM #1
Does anybody know of a way to make Chrome autocomplete URLs in the same fashion that Firefox does? It supports CTRL+Enter to add www. and .com, but what I'm missing is the functionality Firefox adds to this with CTRL+Shift+Enter or Shift+Enter.

Not that I know of. But if you get the developer build of Chrome, it integrates with Google Instant so sites immediately appear as you type them.

That's pretty awesome. The habit is going to be a hard one to break though. And ad-blocking is pretty lacking in Chrome. But I'm adjusting.

What do you mean? There's adblocking extensions out there and some work really well.

I don't think this is a developer build anymore. Seems live to me?

It already does autocomplete, doesn't it? Mine does, anyway. I'm still using 6.0.472.63

I never knew firefox did that.. pretty neat.

Umm, btw, what's the advantage to switching to Chrome? i tried it, and didn't really like it compared to Firefox.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Chrome's Ad-Blocking extensions essentially suck. They slow the browser down significantly, they don't block as much (especially embedded stuff like in Flash videos), and Firefox's has a much better selector system to block new ads.

It does, but what I'm looking for is the functionality to type massassi in the omnibar and hit shift+enter to have it type http://www. And .net for me.

I haven't done that in ages, ever since Firefox started doing the whole "search your history as you type" thing. Which was like, what, Firefox 1.5? Chrome does the same thing (although it's not as good).

Yet it doesn't really matter since Chrome is faster anyway. Kind of embarrassing really.

No, not really. Only on OS X is Chrome even faster than Firefox for me. I'm not talking useless javascript benchmarks either. I mean straight up page load times.

Not to mention, the Firefox 4 beta now seems so fast on my desktop that the pages are rendering literally as fast as my connection can download them.

I always had problems when doing things in multiple tabs (like watching a video in one and using an intense JS app in the other). Chrome doesn't seem to have this problem.

I have that problem IN Chrome. In fact, Flash in general seems to hate Chrome.

You what? The main thing I do in chrome is play flash games on like a billion different websites (yeah, I know, sad) and I never encounter any problems at all

I didn't say anything about Flash

Watching videos can easily be assumed to be flash, since the amount of watchable HTML5 video is about nil (and nor would you WANT to use it because it's even MORE buggy on Chrome than Flash).

Ironically, I never had issues with Flash on Chrome until they started packing it into Chrome itself.

In any case, I still use Chrome on OS X, because it's far superior to Firefox there. But on my PC, Firefox is faster than Chrome on pageloads (I JUST tested it again to be sure), so I'll take the one with faster speeds, better extensions, better UI, and more stability, thanks. :P

At what point did I say you should use Chrome? Way to turn things into a religious war

I didn't care for it either

I like FF better

Opera is way ahead of the curve here, they're adding extension support really soon.
