Editing a file from the xbox

Hi massasians

I am at the end of the line, in my boredom I have decided to mod an original xbox. I am trying to edit an fpk file for this game so I can add some more options to the menu. According to the tutorial I should be able to edit the file with Excel or CSVED. The issue is every time I save with one of those files the damn program adds its own formatting to the file causing the game not to start or simply saying the disc is dirty even though the game is installed on the HD.

Does anyone know any good/powerful editors like excel or something along those lines that WILL NOT add any formatting at ALL.

I have already tried notepad but a lot of characters are not showing up. For example there should be spaces in between some names, in excel sometimes they show up as boxes or u's or a's with strange accent marks.

This really starting to piss me off, anyone who can help will make me a very happy person. :downs:

Try notepad++, it should be able to handle whatever unicode format it's using.

If not, a hex editor. It's just CSV, apparently.

All I know is that if you have an original Splinter Cell or Mechwarrior you can softmod an Xbox. I have an original Splinter Cell, so I'm good. You're welcome for the information.

I wonder if it works with the Xbox Classics version.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

How does that work?

So what is some cool stuff to do on a modded Xbox? I don't care about Xbox 1 imported games, AFAIK the most common thing to do is use it as a media station.

Correct, XBMC started out there. I believe there are linux installs as well.

I was under the impression that the exploit was fixed in subsequent releases but it appears the Platinum Hits version of Splinter Cell works. Mechwarrior was fixed, from what I read, and the version they gave away with Live is not good for this.

Basically, iirc, you need an adapter that allows you to use a thumb drive as a memory card. You then boot up the exploitable game and load a save file you downloaded from the internet and placed on the thumb drive. This "opens the door" for you to install software to the Xbox. It's been a long time since I researched this. Just search for Xbox softmod.

You can splice a regular controller cord to a usb cord (they are the same) and there are some drivers (also a certain version of Pro Action Replay) floating around that allow you to read the card when you plug it in to the memory card slot and put the correct save file on the memory card.

xboxscene.net should have everything you need (or at least point you in the right direction) if you want to go by that route.

Hah, it's a bit more developed than that. In fact, they've officially stopped work on XBMC for XBOX entirely, focusing only on the desktop platforms. Which are, as of the past two years: Windows, Mac and Linux.

There's even a REALLY well made XBMC remote Android app for it.

So XBMC is a little more developed than "started out there"? Wow, really? Thanks for the info. Oh, wait, you thought I meant that there were linux installs of XBMC. No, I was answering his question about what you can do with a modded xbox. Again, reading comprehension FTW.
