Also, in regard to this... I've learned quite a bit of things I didn't know before going through this. I enlisted about 7-8 months ago. Before that I had never even heard of the Delayed Entry Program. I had no idea that most people have to wait 6 months to a year before actually going off to boot camp.
I also never knew that the enlistment standards for the Marine Corps were sooooo ridiculously rigid. According to the rules, if you've ever had any prescription medication, you're disqualified. If you've ever been seriously injured, you're disqualified. If you have any history of drug use other than marijuana (and minimal use at that) you're disqualified. Any kind of legal trouble is an automatic dq. The list goes on and on. You can get around some of this stuff with waivers, I guess, but apparently most people just end up lying about it.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Spook for the advice he's given me during this time. I plan to continue following his advice about boot camp, as his DEP advice has been helpful, however drunk he might have been while giving it to me.
I'm sure a lot of the guys from #massassi are probably glad to see me go, since now they won't have to hear about my training anymore... At least for the next 3 months anyway.
Thanks for the well wishing, everyone. I'm headed out next Sunday. 3 months of boot, and then I have a few months to finish college up. After that I'll transfer my package over to OCS and go become an officer puke. That takes a few months, not to mention the fact that after graduating from OCS it'll probably be 6 months before I'm commissioned as a 2nd Lt. After that goes down, it'll be off to The Basic School where I'll get to learn more about how to be an officer in the Marines. Provided I kick enough ass in TBS, I'm gonna try to get into pilot training down in Florida. If that works out, I'll spend a few years learning how to fly a multi million dollar aircraft.
All that said, odds are good I'm gonna be pretty busy for the next few years. To make this a non-blog thread, feel free to discuss dramatic things you've done in the name of making your life a better experience.
