A question about online advertising
2010-11-15, 1:19 PM #1
I just want to know, has anyone here ever seen an online advertisment that directly led to them making a purchase? (Other than adult services just to keep this work safe)

For me, it was a ticket to the Distant worlds concert in Sydney in April 2011. It was a facebook ad, and I was apparently not the only one who noticed that for once, a facebook ad was finaly useful for something.

Yeah actually a facebook ad took me to a website and I bought a t-shirt. Facebook actually lets you pick the categories of ads you want to see so usually the stuff is pretty relevant.

Never.

I've often wondered if we're headed towards some huge internet advertising crash that puts google out of business because I never ever even click them let alone buy something as a result. I didn't figure ANYBODY did but maybe I'm wrong.

Me and my dad got tickets to see Mark Knopfler at the Manchester Evening News Arena a couple of years ago because I saw an advert on Facebook for the tour. Sometimes I'll be idly browsing Play or Amazon and see they've got stuff advertised and I'll go on to buy them, but I don't know if that counts since I'm already on their site.

Nope, never.

Depends on what you mean. I've made purchases based on reviews before, even having not heard of the item until I saw the review, but that's not really advertisement. Like Dash, I've purchased things on websites when advertised on said sites, but that probably doesn't count. Just a straight up popup though? No, never.

-Well, maybe not never, but you said no adult goods or services~

What happened to feeling empowered on the internet? No, not everyone is unique on the net. I am the millionth viewer, dammit. Where's my prize.

Do Steam ads count? How about GOG email advertisements? Those have lead to impulse purchases due to absurd markdowns.

Ah, good point, though I think nearly everything I've bought off steam on sale was the result of word of mouth, not seeing the advertisements.

Never.

Never.

Also, my firefox is fully equipped with ad-blocking and script-blocking extensions, so I hardly see any ads at all.

Never. Not even when I could see them.

I often wonder how it's possible to make money off internet advertising. My inescapable conclusion is that people are incredibly stupid.

The click through rate of display ads is on average somewhere around .5% (half of one percent). The .5% of people that click on ads (and eventually buy stuff) essentially support the rest of us. It doesn't seem sustainable to me.

Remember when you put up those ****ty UGO ads to pay for the site? The most popular ad was the one for the infamous Tomb Raider nude code, hahaha.

Not on my website, the CTR averages about 1.5% and we actually have been making money on it.

UGO required that, because we were getting hosting from them at the time, IIRC. Same with ReconGamer.

I think you're right. That was a long time ago (7 years or so).

Massassi made money for a while while we were at UGO, it was usually $500-1000/month, the top month ever was $2000 and I think we had 2 million ad views at that time. UGO didn't initially provide hosting, I believe that was later when the ad market started to tank, but it's really hard to remember. We made money for about a year. Before/after that it was a complete money pit. I think I was paying $300/month for a dedicated server which was a Cobalt Raq or something. It was really slow.
