Is Firewire obsolete?

Just wondering.

I just realized my very recent motherboard doesn't have an onboard port for it. Of course I can hook it up via PCI or via the pins on the motherboard, but still. My old socket 939 mobo had one onboard. I feel like I don't see them anymore.

It has higher bandwidth than USB 2.0 (so something like video cameras use it since video files are large), but once everything supports USB 3.0 it will be obsolete.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I use firewire almost every day to transfer HD footage from my camcorder to my Macpro for editing in Final Cut. I then use it to export to my external drive.

My (audio) recording interface uses firewire.

Wow, good thing the mobo EAH suggested had a firewire port, I had no idea those were getting phased out. Like Steven, I use mine almost every day, if not once a week.

Firewire is kind of a bonus, I think you have to still really hunt for a motherboard that has it. It's a feature that only a very small subset of people would actually use, and it probably isn't included in a lot of designs because it would drive the cost up.

From what I have observed it is still the primary method of transfer for most studio engineers.

USB 3.0 is out now, so it's obsolete now.

No, because USB 3.0 has yet to be adopted in any large way.

Firewire is still the best option for HD Cameras and such.

It's obsolete, that doesn't mean it will disappear over-night, but it is obsolete. Give USB 3.0 some time.

Firewire 400 and 800 are obsolete but S1600 and S3200 are coming.

Firewire and USB do different things. The success of one does not necessarily mean the failure of the other.
