New video hardware but....

I just purchased a PNY Geforce 8400 GS/ PCIe/ 512 ddr2 video card for a real good price, and it seems like it really rocks, but then I was going to use it while beta testing my JK project and this is what I get....this really sucks. Does anybody have a solution?

are you talking about the bit off to the left? or is that just a part of the level off in the distance that's supposed to be like that?

or are you talking about the 60fps and you thought it should be way higher... if that's the case you're being limited by vsync and it's not a problem

Here is another pic. I noticed that it is more extreme in darker areas. Its as if JK was given a Photoshop distortion effect. I may just re-install my old video card and return the new one. :nonono:

How about showing us something we all recognize, like level 1?
I had a blog. It sucked.

Ok here is a fresh snapshot from the LEC level 1, note how blotchy the textures appear, and I also adjusted the display settings in jk for optimum viewing.

Welcome to 3D acceleration? That's how it should look?
2010-12-13, 5:16 PM #8
Doesn't JK only run at 16 bit? Looks like normal 16 bit to me.

[edit] It does 32, but the textures are all still 8 bit anyhow so it doesn't matter much.

1. Ignore everyone in this thread except me, since I'm really great

2. Download the unofficial 3D acceleration fix at http://www.jkhub.net (file is ddraw.dll and there's a post about it on the main page, I can't link to it directly due to my sucky cellphone)

3. Put ddraw.dll in JK's root folder

4. Enjoy

(I had the same problem in Win 7.)
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I don't get it, nothing is wrong?
16 bit textures have a limited amount of gray?
Is that it?
2010-12-13, 5:31 PM #11
It does look normal :/

but he mentioned blotchy textures which was exactly what I had before I applied the 3D acceleration fix, though there were various artifacts...this was when I first tried it out on Win 7 a few days ago, and the 3D acc fix fixed it.

JK uses 8-bit textures with 16-bit rendering. That's how it looks. On some cards, it won't do dithering, which can make some things look blotchy in low light, like the first shot. I think the ddraw wrapper fixes this. The other one, from level 1, is like that because that's what the textures look like.

Oh ok. For me the graphics were very much borked and the wrapper made it look like it's supposed to.

I think Im going to try Kroko's suggestion, I completely forgot about that feature in JKhub.net, but the thing is Im still using Windows Xp as my OS.

Here is an example of a previous pic from awhile back. Notice the clarity and dither has a far better quality.

I think I remember some of the 8xxx Nvidia drivers used a hybrid software/hardware mode for JK for some reason. 16bit textures would work except they looked crappy like that, and framerate was locked at refresh rate regardless of settings. I vaguely remember looking at the advanced options with -displayconfig and the '3D Device' name for the renderer was not the normal one.

Well anyway thanks for everyone's effort, it was worth a shot. I guess its back to the old video card. Im going to update alot of the components in my PC anyway and perhaps I will invest in a little more of higher quality video card here in the near future.

btw: I just viewed something on Youtube and I received that same defect in its video quality, back to Best Buy where it came from.

Did you at least update your drivers to the latest version from nvidia's web site?

This happens with all new cards.

I used the installation CD that came with the video card.

JK is old. Mod something else.
2010-12-13, 9:01 PM #28
I agree with both Emon and Vinny.

This problem is going to happen no matter what video card you buy. JK is an honest-to-god DirectX 5 game, and modern cards and drivers are not designed to support it. The fact that it works at all is a miracle.

Get the ones from the website, seriously. Those could be multiple years old. :carl:

It kind of looks like the colour depth is being reduced to even lower than normal, although I'm not sure what exactly is below 8-bit. Also, you're not going nuts, I spent a couple of months hunting a colour problem in my mat's before figuring out Bobo Fett's mat16 had dropped to 15-bit colour (7 years ago).

Did the dll work?
2010-12-14, 6:26 AM #31
I tried the dll. file from JKhub and it still made no difference. Im going to download other video drivers from nvidia website and see what that does.
