What kind of Smartphone / Phone?
2010-12-21, 10:48 PM #1
This question is prompted because I recently upgraded from the EnV2 to a Droid X with Verizon (A ridiculously awesome upgrade)

What kind of phone do you have, out of curiosity? Trying to figure out what the market share is for Massassians.

Palm Pre. It uploads embarrassing photos to Facebook faster than any other phone. It doesn't do much other than that. It would be great for multitasking if the processor was faster and the OS wasn't so slow as to be barely able to open its home screen.

I was seriously considering a Droid R2D2 (R2D2 version just because) but my wife just started a new job at a reduced wage because her commute went from 40 or more minutes down to about 2-3 minutes. I was tempted to get a droid, even though I certainly don't need any kind of a smartphone, because talk radio stations in my area suck after the big three (Rush, Hannity, Beck) are done and I'm left trying to tune in mediocre radio or distant stations. I was considering a subscription to XM and using the XM app to listen on the droid. I'm also pretty big on using google services so I'm presuming that most of them integrate nicely on droid. I'll reevaluate my decision to upgrade sometime during the summer probably.

Also, I think you should have included Windows Mobile phones as an option.

Android or gtfo. End thread.

When the incredible HD drops and receives the gingerbread update ios will look antequated.

Sidenote: I don't understand why they still make ****berries. Unless it is an extreme business situation I just don't see the point for them. Even windows mobile does a better job then any RIM phone on the market right now. God damn 16 year old girls need to learn what a real handset is instead of some buggy piece of crap from five years ago.

I honestly had no desire to get a smartphone, and the word 'app' seriously makes my skin crawl... but I needed to get a contract because my partner lives 400 miles away and so we're obviously on the phone a lot, and I was able to get the google Nexus for free on a £25/month plan. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it's certainly a change from my previous phone, which barely had a functioning predictive text

I used to have the Palm Pre, it was my first smartphone (see also: Emon's post). I didn't find it to be THAT slow, but webOS was simply too early. WebOS 2.0 fixes a TON of the problems, including easier development, hardware acceleration, more APIs for better apps, etc. I feel if WebOS 2.0 had been the first release, things would be different. Oh well!

So I moved on to the HTC EVO, which is Android. I wish I'd gotten the Epic 4G instead, but there was no rumors of it when I got the EVO. The EVO isn't a bad device at all though, pretty darn fast and the huge screen is awesome. I just want a physical keyboard for playing :P

I have a Blackberry Bold 9700 through AT&T. I got it almost a year ago, before there were really Android phones available through AT&T. I'm currently on my brother's plan, however, I'm planning on getting my own sometime in the near future, at which time, I will go with an Android.
2010-12-22, 6:56 AM #12
Had 3 iPhones, from the original to the 3GS.

Now I have a Samsung Focus and I love it so much more. Never had a desire for an Android phone at all.

Get off AT&T if you possibly can. AT&T is retarded (besides being the most expensive provider and also a horrible network), they actually make their Android phones unable to "sideload" apps, basically no installing apps from anything other than the market. They are the ONLY provider to do this. There's a way around it with a special PC program, but in general it is stupid.

Motorola DROID X here. I've used a Windows 6.0 mobile phone (Palm), an iPhone 3G, and a Blackberry 8830 Worldwide before this. I don't see myself ever going back to any of them at all.

I added Windows Mobile to the poll.

I just got the Huawei Ascend Android phone with Cricket. It's a cheap phone ($110 with no contract) but I'm quite satisfied with it.

WinMo 6.5

It was nice at first, but I've gotten tired of it. Next phone will be Android.

Damn you! :colbert:

Also, FYI, the Epic is getting Froyo on Dec 26th, according to some pretty strong rumors. :neckbeard:

I am definitely planning on getting off AT&T. I'm thinking about going with Sprint, though I need to make sure I'll have coverage when I move.

Don't hold your breath, Samsung sucks with support. The Fascinate STILL hasn't seen a 2.2 update yet.

I lol'd.

Oh, I forgot. I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS and I have gotten a few chances to play with the iPhone 4 and I was impressed. I've never gotten the chance to try an Android phone before. :(

Actually, this rarely has to do with the manufacturer. It's usually the phone providers (Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, etc) who cause updates to be horribly delayed. They have their own testing on top of the manufacturer's testing which the update must pass, for some stupid reason (because it never helps). Hell, in Aussieland, there's the HTC Desire still running on 2.1 despite the 2.2 update being available elsewhere for about 6 months now.

Yeah the keyboard was the main selling point for me, it's a nice key pad too if you haven't got to play with one yet.

I got a Droid in April, and then exchanged it 2 weeks later (30 days no questions asked return policy) for an HTC Incredible.

Best decision of my life. I freaking love this phone. It's running 2.2 stock with the Swype keyboard.

I though everyone would be all over the Iphones, but apparantly the droid is the winner (and seems to be gaining market share pretty rapidly.

I'm glad I made a good choice.

I have a Samsung Convoy:

I really have no interest for a smartphone at this point, and what interest is blocked by my need to have a phone that can withstand my abuse.

The fact that you think WP7 is a "****ed up" version of the Kin proves that you have no idea what you're talking about.
2010-12-22, 6:10 PM #35
WP7 and Kin were completely separate projects. Tibby, you're a moron. WP7 is actually an excellent mobile OS. It doesn't have as many features as Android or iOS but it's not targeted at those people. It's targeted towards regular phone users who want more features but don't want to get sucked in to the features and craziness of other smartphones. Pretty much just like their commercial, a phone that doesn't get in the way but still does what you need it to do.

Galaxy S Vibrant. Been running 2.2 for a while now. Really like the phone. Very very quick, especially after lag fixes.
2010-12-22, 6:46 PM #38
Kin was a phone and was terrible.
Close enough.
2010-12-22, 7:21 PM #39
Not close enough at all. You try way too hard.

I just got an iPhone 4 since the upgrade was $25. Otherwise I was planning on getting an Android phone and I probably will next. I really need to do some playing around with the OS and some of the hardware as well, but I'm leaning heavily toward Android. I should also check out Verizon I supposed, although I've never had a problem with ATT. I get 23% off my phone service (not data or my fiance's line) for working at Sears (haven't worked there in over three years) so it's kinda hard to give that up.
