spook isn't eligible for financial aid because he is responsible and saves his money.

I have too much money in my checking account to get federal financial aid, because I have ~7000 dollars in liquid pretend money. However, my douchebag neighbor who spent the same amount on a boat, gets financial aid because he's poor.

Yeah, that's is crap.
I would have to spend over 8000$ on school before I would be able to qualify for aid.

That's why you remove almost all of your money from any account before you apply.

I thought everyone did this.

7 large in your bank doesn't exactly qualify you as broke.

I only get 60% because I only went to Iraq once (the new GI Bill is based on years of active duty, and only my deployment time counts at this point)

At the community college I end up with money in my pocket, but university is going to cost more and I'm trying to save it up now so that I can pay cash for each semester. It still frustrates me that saving for a house makes me ineleigible.

Scholarships. Apply for lots of scholarships, don't just expect to rely on federal aid.

I realize this is how the world works. The silly part is that my neighbors get financial aid because they went into debt over a ****ing boat.

I do need to apply for scholarships...

I just have no personal merit!

Actually I'm pretty sure there's a clause in the FAFSA paperwork where he was supposed to report the boat. There's a place to report freaking everything.

The moral of the story is that (in my opinion at least) if you're financially responsible, don't go into debt for school. If that means you don't go, then so be it. Money in the bank is worth more than credentialed indebtedness (again, imo).

Yeah, but the way the world works is that the irresponsible and the dishonest and the ignorant get more help. The way to get around this is to be unhappy or terrible. Merry Christmas. :D

The answer is pretty obvious. Buy a boat.

I don't believe in debt, especially for college.

Hopefully I get a respectable amount of disability from the government (ALL RIGHT THANKS FOR YOUR TAX DOLLERZ GAIZ) and i can pay with that

So you don't want to go into debt to go to school, but it's okay for all of us to go into debt (as a country) to put you through school? W t f?

No, but I would sure like some small compensation for all those nightmares that I can pay for two of my books with. :hist101:

It sounds like he can still get some G.I. bill but was denied on the FASFA or whatever, which isn't related to the military at all. Spook, sorry, I don't mean to make light of your situation, it's just that if you have a fundamental problem with going into debt, it's a bit silly to complain about student aid when indeed our entire country is in debt to support those programs. And no, it's not all the democrats or Obama's fault, the republicans are just as guilty (if not more, lately) for getting us into more and more debt.

I don't have a fundamental problem with student aid either, I really wish you got your aid, especially in light of your service and the fact that it's clear you're not going to be a drain on society like half the morons who get paid by our government to go to school and never finish.

I think all combat veterans with honorable discharges should get free tuition for 4 years at a state/public school. I wish our tax money was used for that instead of dropping condoms on 3rd-world countries.
2010-12-23, 11:38 PM #23
I'd rather they dropped condoms on our own country than any of the above. :)

I can understand his feelings. My wife had pointed out to me previously that if we were illegal she would have been able to enroll our son in Headstart. As it is, we make too much money and pay a discounted rate, because I was military, for preschool.

Also, Brian, you go too far. Reservists know what their education benefits are when they sign up. If they want full tuition they should do the full three years active duty currently required.

That's definitely an initiative conservatives could get behind.

Brian, I didn't feel like you were being antagonistic or anything! I am more than capable of paying for school on my own, but I'd naturally rather not spend time applying for scholarships. Especially when, in contrast to others, most of the aid money will go to a house and school. Only a very small portion goes to coke and hookers.
