Apparently the car was owned by the city :downswords:

Leave it to New Yorkers to trash talk out of a window instead of going out to help.

What was that guy possibly going to do? Its not like those bozos would have listened to his directions anyway. If it was 6am and I was in my underwear during a cold winter morning you bet your ass I wouldn't go out there either.
2010-12-28, 12:42 AM #5
I dunno, be a spotter to tell the guy if he was about to say...run into a car. Provide suggestions or materials which may assist. Suggestions like "let's contact the owner of these cars and see if they'll move so we don't smash the hell out of their car" or "let's tow these cars carefully out of the way first" or "let's get another chain out here and pull from the other side," etc.

That's not to say I don't think these guys were being dumb, it's just that yelling obscenities out a window isn't exactly the high road.

I think it was pretty obvious that they were running into the car when the car was getting dragged through the snow, and losing parts on the ground. There's no way the guy in the earth mover didn't know what was going on.

The tow truck driver should have known better than to try and tow at that angle, too.

I don't know, how exactly was the wrecker supposed to pull an articulated front end loader, neither designed for the snow, out of the snow without getting stuck to begin with? I mean, it's easy for some limp wristed dude in his boxers to second guess them but **** gets ****ed up all the time when road crews plow. The owner will surely get reimbursed and the equipment was back on the road to deal with the blizzard.

I'm going to quote this guy from reddit on the subject since I've never driven a front end loader:

Quote:
Whoever was driving that frontloader is a ****ing retard. First of all he could have gotten out without the help of that tow truck. He can use the bucket pushed down on the ground to shimmy his way out. I have done it before and I don;t se ehow he got that thing stuck in the first place. Second, he crazy twisting was just making him dig deeper in the snow and grinding the snow underneath into a nice slippery sheen of ice and slush.

And even still, without driving a front end loader, it's obvious the guy could have reduced or eliminated the damage. For example, he let the plow on the front swing right into the car BEFORE raising it. There was no need for that.

Bucket. He should have raised the bucket but he probably didn't expect the wrecker to drag him through the car. Your quote makes some interesting points but the problem I have with this is that we don't see anything prior to when the douchebag with the camera woke up and started filming and shouting obscenities to somebody who's actually working. I'm sure both guys felt terrible for damaging the vehicle and were probably worried about what their bosses would say.

If it was one love tap I'd get it, but they blatantly destroyed that explorer. That takes a special kind of stupid, no excuses.

I think they didn't feel bad at all.. Or the first time the truck ran into the car they would have stopped and re-planned their effort. They obviously didn't care and continued to wreck it.

That wrecker was never going to pull that loader in any other direction. The loader operator didn't seem able to get the thing to move in any other direction, either. Better they just quit effing around and got it over with. I imagine the wrecker driver figured that once the loader got some momentum, it would turn away from the vehicle. Sure, they might have been able to do something different but the only truly stupid person in the video was holding the camera. I'm guessing those poor guys on the ground had been dealing with the situation for an hour or more and we just saw the tail end "**** it" that concluded the ordeal.

They work well. In fact, in many places in the US snow chains are required by law for travel in snowy areas.

Yeah, some snow chains even have spikes in them for better traction. Actually they also make tires that have little metal spikes in them for snow driving.

Chains increase traction dramatically. Especially on a 4wd vehicle like the snowplow there.

I had a full set of studded snow tires on my Ford Escort when I lived in Alaska and it seemed like I could go anywhere. I loved zipping by SUVs and trucks that were stuck.

Get another loader and dig the first one out. Problem solved for less money than replacing a car. :P

how about waiting for the owner of the other vehicle to move it? Or tow it out of the way first?

(If the vehicle was owned by the city anyway, that should have been pretty damn easy to work those details out.)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

It amuses me to no end that you refuse to acknowledge that they were incompetent. There have been about 10 good solutions to the problem in the video already provided, all of which would have worked in that situation. I'm sure you enjoy playing devil's advocate and trying to support those guys, but they didn't deserve it. They screwed up, bad.

Also funny how you say "well they must've tried for a while", as if that makes it okay.
2010-12-30, 2:21 PM #36
Of course the entire situation was mismanaged to include the preparation. I'm sure the tires were in poor condition and certainly not meant for snow. Chains would have alleviated the situation, if they even had any available. Another loader could have helped but they (the city) are having a hard enough time with the snow removal and who knows where that resource was. I'm only playing devil's advocate for these guys because the, presumably, hour or more that the loader was stuck there is a mystery. For all we know he tried everything that was suggested and none of it worked. I just don't like the insults towards working stiffs that are doing their best to get things done for the public good. At worst they made some bad judgment calls but nothing worth yelling obscenities to from the comfort of your warm apartment. **** happens, especially when operating heavy equipment in a weather emergency.

Really, if that's their best, they should quit. I worked around heavy equipment when I did construction. What happened in that video is inexcusable. Mostly likely the driver was NOT trained to use it, just "get in it and move snow out of the way". Now, once the profanities started, I muted it (my kids were watching), so I really have no idea what the semi-naked dude with the video camera was saying. But still, repeatedly smashing that vehicle, even if it was a state-owned vehicle (hey tax dollars getting crushed), was flat out ridiculous.

New York should have enough chains, considering that its sorta in blizzardland
