My grandfather opened a can of varnish about 10 feet from our bird cage to refinish his front door. The bird dropped dead in minutes from the fumes, which weren't that strong as far as us humans were concerned. I can easily imagine some kind of cloud accidentally released from a factory or something causing this.

I don't know much about New World birds but if, like many over-wintering birds, these blackbirds turn to feeding on seeds and grain through winter, then the flock feeding on a contaminated food pile would probably do the trick. There have been several recorded instances of pesticide poisoning causing mass die-offs in birds.

I would hate to be a part of that clean up crew. Especially since they don't really know for sure, lol.

Silly boy, all this end of the world hub bub centers around not the year 2012, but the day that in our calendar happens to be December 21st, 2012. Or the 23rd, depends on who you ask.

Hail.

It hailed here at my house the day this happened (which is nowhere near Beebe, where the gravity-challenged birds were) because a storm system came through. The hail was totally unexpected.

It was sprinkling and about 67°F, and my 4-yr-old son was out back playing in the "dirt box" (think sandbox). Then all of a sudden it sounded like it was pouring rain, and I looked out the window and it was hailing. I ran to the back door, but he had followed me back in. The hail was brief and was only pea-sized.

Anyway, that line of storms crossed the whole state, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if those stupid birds got nailed. Hate 'em anyway. Nothing like having a few hundred blackbirds land in your backyard and crap all over everything.

Maybe it's just me... I've seen large flocks of birds, but... a thousand? It seems extraordinary.

I know what caused this. An emission, from the heart of the Zone. They cook all the birds alive in mid-flight and send them tumbling down to the ground.

-Or maybe it was hail.

This sort of thing reminds me of frog and fish rains.

Please tell me you were not just mentioning the now dead gaming Zone rooms. Because that might be more than I can handle at this particular moment in time.

No, it was a Stalker reference, although at times the MSN Gaming Zone seemed likewise full of strange mutants and ne'erdowells.

-Seems like lightning would leave very obvious physical marks on birds, it must have been hail.

Not particularly extraordinary. I know of a local rook/jackdaw roost that regularly reaches 2000+ birds in winter. This winter I watched a fairly average mixed roost of knot and oysterctacher that was in the region of 5000 and 2000 birds respectively. Murmurations of starlings regularly reach tens of thousands in the UK and no doubt also in the Netherlands. In Rome they number in the millions. Birds concentrated into their hundreds and thousands is one of the main draws of winter birdwatching.

It's either the spelling or the pronounciation.
nope.
2011-01-03, 2:48 PM #28
It's both. Believe it or not, last year or the year before, the state senate was debating changing the spelling of the state...

I had a blog. It sucked.

The Oklahomans are pissing in the Arkansas River again.

[On a side note, I like how in the fishy article they are saying the two events are coincidental...]

It's the date the Mayan calendar ends. Most people with half a brain can figure out that the world isn't going to end, it's just an end to one of their cycles. But regardless the Mayans had some cool stuff and it's definitely not garbage.
