Damn, my Win98 Cd is broken...
2003-12-31, 11:42 AM #1
I had a Windows 98 SE full version CD, and now It has a big scratch on it and is utterly useless. I keep it so I can do a clean install of windows if/when my system dies on me.

I still have the restore CDs that came w/ my comp, but I prefer a 100% virgin windows install instead of installing windows along with all of the crap thats also on the backup Cd.

If someone has a win98 SE full version Cd that they no longer need/want, I would be willing to buy it from you or copy it and send it back. (If I copied it, it would be 100% legal b/c I already bought a win98 disc once and the copy is to replace the one that was damaged.)

Find a good CD-RW drive and see if it can read it fine. (If you haven't done that already.)

CD-RW drives are much better at reading discs and can generally read some fairly damaged discs.

If that actually manages to work, make a copy.

This one has a deep gouge in it that you can feel with your fingernail. My mom's cat must have been playing with it and ended up clawing the hell out of it.

I'll gladly swap the cat for a disc... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

You'd be surprised at how mangled stuff can be and still be read.

Or maybe you could let the man use win98 without bothering him about Linux? Could work. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Oh, you can't ask any question on this board about windows or any microsoft product without someone harassing you about Linux or something.

but you realize, using win98 will just lead him farther and farther away from the pure and sole truth that is LINUX?

I wouln't mind using linux, but I have no problems with windows and I can't be bothered to learn how to use linux properly. But I really don't think we need to talk about it in every single thread about OS's.

I have a cd again, but I had to take the various windows cab files acquired from [classified FTP source] and reassemble them and then burn it as a bootable data cd.

I can boot with the cd, but I don't want to actually test the install unless I really need to. (You can understand why--recreating a win98 Cd is extremely complicated and there is a huge possibility for error.) I'll save the backup for when windows gets so screwed up that I have nothing to lose by running it.

This is all legal b/c like I said before, I'm creating this Cd for backup purposes and to replace the damaged one.

If you're going to go to that trouble, why not simply download the whole CD from somewhere and burn it?

It's the same thing... It should be a lot easier too.

If my burner was working (I cant get good ISO's off my regular drive), I would offer to set up a temoporary FTP for you to download an ISO, but right now I cant...

no need. I just learned that If you just burn the files in C:/windows/options/cabs to a bootable CD (You can make a cd bootable in nero) you basically have the same thing as a full version windows disc. (FYI, a bootable cd is like having a boot disk burned onto your windows 98 install cd rom-- with it, I don't need to rely on easily damaged [and lost!] floppy boot disks anymore. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/cool.gif] )

Just boot into dos, run fdisk to kill and remake your partitions, then run format.com to format your drive to msdos, and then extract the contents of the Cd to your hD, then run setup.exe off of your HD, and then windows starts installing and you're done.
