VIDEO: http://www.newsy.com/videos/controversy-over-hungary-s-new-media-law/

This country allegedly took its place in the new EU presidentship "trio" (along with Belgium and Spain) from Jan 1. Also, from Jan 1, a new CENSORSHIP law was introduced.

As one of the first "initiatives," a Budapest radio station TILOS RADIO was fined a ****load for playing an old Ice-T song at 17:00 (although not as many people here speak English as you'd think, and those who do aren't 5)...

Originally posted by Freemuse.com:
Radio and television stations could be fined up to 730,000 euros (975,000 dollars) for going against "public interest, public morals and order", or for broadcasting "partial information", without the media authority having to clearly specify what constitutes an infringement of the law.

Probably a result of pressure from the US

I don't think so. It's just a ****ty government that thinks totalitarianism is the way to go. The previous government had almost a revolt on its hands (I kind got into some gas grenade crossfire back in 2006, was fun), but at least they weren't trying to run a dictatorship...

Oh well. Not sure for how long I'm going to stay here anyway.

It's been all over the news here in Holland as well.

Journalists can be forced to reveal their sources on matters of national security now?

Geez...

Yes, but the group responsible for censorship is controlled by the government who ultimately decide what is good for public morals and order. One of the requirements there is for news to be "politically balanced" -- meaning, I suppose, balanced in the ruling party's favor. :D

I guess they're hungry for censorship.

Hungarian news - fair and balanced.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Yeah, talk about bringing the freedom of press to a finish.
