Stick with your squad, don't play recon and try to stay in cover and you should be alright. The game is kind of a pain in the ass until you get some of the higher level weapons and specializations, but you can still kick ass even without magnum ammo.

I restarted the game and joined the same server..played for hours without a problem. I was quite annoyed that 1) I suck, and 2) I had to play for hours before I was able to level medic enough to get shock paddles...you start with nothing! wtf!

Yeah you kind of start with nothing, but at least you have the PKM, which is a very strong LMG. I'd say it's one of the best, but all of the medic weapons are good, with the exception of the Type 88.

All of the starting weapons are good, with the exception of the AEK-971 whose high fire rate and good iron sights cannot make up for its overall lousiness. But you get the XM8 Prototype as the next rifle unlocked, so you can't really complain.

Just play it cool, stay behind your squadmates until you get a feel for the game and try to find a server where people are communicating. The game is extremely rage-inducing when you're on a losing team that won't communicate. I can't give you any advice for which servers are good since I play on PS3.
