A lot. Southern Ontario used to dominate the Massassi map.

Tibby, a summary would've been nice. Linking to a consultation notice written largely in legalese means few people are going to know what it is or care to find out; especially as the main parts of interest are down in the appendix and refer to a document you haven’t pointed us to.

It looks like the amendments change lines in the old broadcasting rules regarding “False or misleading” news, obscenity and the responsibility of the licensee to respond to complaints. Is this a relaxation or tightening of rules? Good/bad? I don’t care enough to write your post for you.

I don't understand the problem.

It looks like they're tightening up on what they can broadcast. Not that the news is prone to making false stories over here, but at least there's accountability now if this goes through.

No, that's the way things are right now. That's why we don't have garbage like Fox in Canada.

They want to loosen the restrictions, like the United States, not tighten them.

Heaven forbid people should be allowed to watch something that is ... *gasp* wrong.

That's different than false reporting and sensationalism disguised as journalism.

Wow, things must have been really bad there before they enacted such restrictive regulations against freedom of speech. Thank God we don't have that sort of problem here.

There's nothing wrong with reading (or printing) something that is wrong, like The Onion or the Daily Show. The key difference is that the Onion and the Daily Show do not represent themselves as unbiased and factual.

Free speech has limits. Shouting "fire" in a crowded theater isn't protected speech because it can kill people. Fox News can kill billions.

I seriously would like to know what precipitated your country's restrictions on the press. Here in the US one party seems interested in curtailing freedom of the press because they view certain sectors of it to be obstacles. Of course they don't say that and simply make false accusations like Emon above. People like that really have zero credibility on the issue because they only criticize the perceived right of center press when the actual biggest example of all that they proclaim is wrong with organizations such as Fox News would be the MSNBC cable network. They are so bad that both the NBC news operation and MSNBC news website do as much as they can to limit their association with that network.

What about Megan Meier? Who was trolled until she killed herself by her friends mom on myspace(Lied and posed as a boy with a crush), who was later acquitted.

MSNBC is bad, sure, but you're delusional if you think they're worse than Fox. Fox is a tabloid, Wookie. I'm serious. This is the News Corp business model. Tabloids.

Uhh, the CBC has run several stories about the current government in power being a bunch of dicks. Hell they made Air Farce. It's not about stopping news from saying bad things about the government, it's stopping news from making up complete lies in order to further an agenda.

Yeah, because it's extremely hard to convince those opposed to tyranny to openly accept it.
