We have found giant volcanos that shoot into space.
We have explored the depths, and found bizarre creatures.

We landed on the moon.

We learned how to use atomic fission for peaceful energy generation, and will soon enough be able to harness the power of a star for the same purpose. (Fusion)

We sent our DNA and a message across space where it will forever travel.

This guy right here made all modern technology possible, and ushered in the age of information. We have billions in a modern computer.

Science is kickin' rad.

Well, that's a pretty good case you present...

It's because cinnamon also owns.

MythBusters shot down the myth that we never went to the moon... thats good enough for me lol
2011-01-22, 7:42 PM #9
It's not even a myth, there is no possible way to question it.

Fusion energy might still be a while away though.

Things like the transistor and the internet are far more significant human achievements than anything you have listed.

I mean, I get the cool factor of astronomy and stuff, but I wish that wasn't always the first thing people think of when they thing of science. Nothing against them, but compared to a lot of other field, they are pretty useless.
2011-01-22, 9:30 PM #13
If you find a kickin' rad picture of a transistor then go for it, this is by no means an exhaustive list.

To be fair, Tracer is right. We didn't, astronauts did.

Well... here's a picture of 2.3 billion of them.

That's a good point, have we actually gotten anything from landing on the moon? It's impressive and all, but has it actually benefited anybody (besides the lucky few that got to actually go)

Off the top of my head, we got a mirror that allowed us to measure the speed of light, soil samples and seismometer readings that let us map the internal structure of the moon.
2011-01-23, 2:32 AM #21
Is that actually from landing on the moon, or the technology of space exploration?
I admit I'm rather ignorant on the subject, but I thought that we did very little from the actual moon landing, and most of our technology advances are from other space ventures.
Though of course you can argue that all the technology developed in order to get us to the moon in the first place has had a lot of real-world applications.

We got teflon from space age technology. Nonstick coating ftw!
2011-01-23, 4:31 AM #24
A non-stick coating which peels off. Oh, and it's poisonous.

LOL at people who think we didn't land on the moon..

All these great and fantastic achievements in science and technology wrought by human ingenuity and creativity to help better our lives...

...and yet almost half of the United States believes that humans and the Earth are < 10,000 years old.

...and yet shows like American Idol and Teen Mom continue to captivate more and more of the American viewership.

...and yet Professor Stephen Hawking and Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson remain obscure blips on the public conscious forever shadowed by Kim Kardashian's ass.

Teflon wasn't invented as a result of the space program. Also teflon itself is biologically inert (useful in implants and piercings), it's the stuff it outgasses at 400F that is dangerous.
