Looks like there is trouble brewing in Egypt.

www.latimes.com

Apparently thousands are rioting and protesting in Cairo and Alexandria. Tanks are being used to augment police forces. And Members of the presidents(?) family have fled to Europe.

They've turned off the internet and mobile phone networks there to apparently to stop people being able to get organised, heh now they're stuck with bored, frustrated and angry people.

Basically what Ni said. How would you feel if the internet was turned off by the government where you live?

It was a matter of time. Egypt is dictatorship with an abysmal human rights record. The West has turned a blind eye to those abuses in exchange for being a strong ally in a mostly hostile region.

Not just turned a blind eye, sent aid to the tune of several billion annually(from the US at least)

Yeah, when the members of a popular uprising are young, working-age and technologically literate it's pretty much time to give up and flee the country.

Mubarak's created the position of VP and shuffled in a new prime minister all from his pool of cronies. How exactly did he expect that to placate anyone?

Obviously his [not]low[enough] budget political adviser probably told him it was a good idea.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out with respect to the United States' relationship with the Egyptian government. Whatever the case, it's a beautiful thing when people rise up, violently or not, against a government that they believe is failing them. Particularly consequential (from what I see at least) is that the military seems to be starting to side with the people. I won't say I hope for "peace" because I believe that is unrealistic and that bloodshed can be easily justified by the need for change. I do hope that in the end, the general populace will get what they need and not something worse than what they had.

So even Fox News is on the anti-Mubarak bandwagon. This cover story title, "As opposition groups plan a million-person march, Egypt's military promises not to fire on peaceful demonstrations — a sign army support for President Mubarak may be unraveling", implies that if Egypt's military might fire on peaceful protesters, that would be a sign they support Mubarak. I'm skeptical that a relatively pro-western, Israel friendly, and Christian friendly moderate muslim is so much worse than what this "pro-democracy" movement will result in. Time will tell.

This is a great example of what can be achieved with (largely) peaceful protest, a collective desire to change government, good luck to them.

wow that was disturbing
2011-02-04, 8:41 PM #34
How likely is this scenario?

The revolution is successful and a government is installed that is very resentful and downright belligerent to America/West. This in turn fuels the rest of the Middle-East in a mass outcry against the United States/West. Oil supplies are cut off to everyone possibly except China. This sends oil prices skyrocketing and plunges Western economies into a tailspin.

Feasible? Stretch? or Downright asinine?

Dalf's scenario leaves one very important portion out. If a regime change in Egypt results in a fundamentalist state that resents western culture, it will in turn mean that it is also a fundamentalist state that does not recognize Israel. Should that happen, I don't think any of us is even remotely familiar with the bloodshed that will occur.
