I think I'm going to need a change of pants...

Sooo... Planetside Next... According to the president of SOE, it's due out late first quarter/early second quarter 2011. Maaaybe sometime around March...

Yeah, I think I'm going to need a change of pants now because that news was so AWESOME!

I have no idea if any of you other Massassians have played or even heard about Planetside, but it is an amazing game. Usually, if you hear something negative about the game, it is about an issue that that lasted all of a month and has since been resolved. Common ones in particular that keep being mentioned:

Lag - When it first launched, the scale was unprecidented. The numbers of people playing were huge. Even by today's standards. Connections weren't so great at the time but they fixed the problem quickly. With today's computers and ISP's, lag is hardly an issue with the game. Ever. It's your basic Noob excuse for quiting when they suck.

Hackers - When aren't they a problem? Every time they pop up, in any game, people act like this is the first time that issue has ever happened. There were some bad periods over the years but bans, and blocking trial versions of the game for short stints, clears them right up.

Graphics - It's an MMO from 2003. With all the content they put into it (weapons, vehicles, massive landscapes, incliment weather, etc...) there wasn't much they could add on visually. The focus was on actual gameplay in a time when people were calling for more realism because that's what all the other games focused on. Besides, some of us still play JK & JO... Graphics schmaphics...

Content - Again, we go back to when it FIRST came out. It had a lot in it then, but since, has at least doubled or tripled it. There are so many different things to do, drive, fly, or shoot (and different means to go about doing it) that picking how is half the fun.

I could go on & on about the great aspects of the game, but that would be wasting everyone's time. I figure, people on Massassi are smart enough to look crap up themselves; so I figured I'ld address the negative comments they would find from people who played the game the whole of two weeks or a month.

Planetside is one of my favorite games. The expansions sorta messed it up, though. :\

Not sure if you checked out any of the news, but they aren't going to have any BFR's in the new one. Stated by the president himself.

Some of the expansion stuff was great. But most people didn't like the BFR's. I had no problem with them myself. Never bothered to even try and get the certs to drive one. The addition of the caverns & the modules was was different. Took a little getting used to. But after you got the perks they offered, it started to get really good.

I remember when SOE decided to make thing's interesting and took away all the vehicles. Each faction had to go and fight in the caves to bring back the mods in order to earn them back. One vehicle at a time.

played planetside a few times when they started that level capped free play stuff and i thought it was a good game and as i expected it can get a bit empty in many areas... at least the map let you know where the action was so you could go straight to the battle

I played and loved Planetside for a decent while after it came out, in an outfit called the 316th RDF. We specialized in taking towers, and we were very effective. It was a lot of fun! Then they started to lame it up. I never was into the whole alien-laser-plasma stuff, and they just kept going more and more in that direction. So...I quit.

I really liked that game, played on a free trial or something, can't recall.

Don't dig on games with recurring fees.

LV's OP is p. funny. I'd say most of those problems must be pretty legit if you felt the need to spend 3/4 of your post debunking them :P. "Graphics Shmaphics!"

lol... eh, I just read some news about the sequel & was kind of excited. As far as legit problems, there are a few, yes. However, as far as those four no. If you check out the dates of all those online reviews, 97% of them are from '03 when it first debuted. Back then it might have had those, but not nowadays.

He had a valid point though, lol.

Actually, I was surprised at the number of people here who have played it. Normally if I tell someone about the game their face goes all blank and they think I'm referring to some stupid indie game. After I tell them a little about it they usually get all excited and borrow my copy. Unfortunately, paying for a subscription is where most everyone loses interest. Even me. I only pick it up again for a month maybe once or twice every year.

When was the screen shot taken, Tracer? Because I don't remember Battle Islands at all & the arrangment of that galactic map is totally different. It's either pre-2006 or sometime within the past 6-8 months...

Since before '06. If I remember correctly from what I read of the 'story' (if you can call it one), it happened around the last expansion with the caverns right? It's been that way for years now.

Can you still tell when a weather pattern is going to be moving inland? I guess they just give you plenty of room around each continent to watch them move in?

Nope. At least, not that I'm aware of. It's been a little while for me but no weather patterns appear on the maps anymore.
