Battery

Another name thread.

Say you go into a shop that keeps their batteries behind a counter. You go up to the bloke behind said count as ask for one of these:

What do you ask for?
nope.

"One of those batteries that you can plug into itself and cause it to fail catastrophically."

Or a 9 volt.

Speaking of which, is there a particular engineering reason why both terminals are on the same side for the 9V?

Inside them there's basically 6 1.5V cells usually so the negative and positive end up at the same side.
nope.

I chose "9V Battery!" but I would really say "9V Battery" because I'm not as excited as you are about batteries. Dare I ask what you are putting it in!?

Who actually asks the guy behind the counter? Just walk up to the batteries that are on display.

They're probably considered controlled substances like SUDAFED.

That's a pretty good point. I've never heard of a shop keeping batteries behind the counter anyway.

Also if I needed help I'd just ask where the batteries are.

Lots of stores keep batteries in their camera section, behind a counter. Typically though, they're a large array of oddball batteries, not 9V ones like this.
2011-02-18, 8:10 AM #30
I bought one in a newsagents the other day and it was behind the counter. Probably because they're easy to shoplift.
nope.
2011-02-18, 9:13 AM #31
Why would you want to shoplift batteries?

They're batteries.

Okay, they're frigging expensive, but...

I've seriously never seen or heard of batteries kept behind a counter before.
With all the different types available nowadays (not just talking voltage) it would be a pain in the ass if they were.

never seen the basic battery types behind a counter.

The little corner shop nearest my old house in the city centre had the bacon "on request", i.e. kept in the fridges in the stockroom because of frequent shoplifting.

The friggin' Bacon.
2011-02-19, 4:40 AM #36
At a real grocery store, the cost of protecting the bacon is far greater than the loss to shoplifting.
2011-02-19, 9:26 AM #37
Did I ever tell the story of the lady in the grocery store sitting on the meat?
2011-02-19, 1:38 PM #38
Normally I see them on display at, or near, the front counter. Best of both worlds I guess.

They had the close one of the customer toilets at my work because we kept finding empty steak packets in there. People were shoplifting unpackaged raw meat. :gonk:

I've shoplifted unpackaged raw meat in public bathrooms many a time.
