Selling a Macbook

This is more of a "feelout" page for selling it, as I won't be making my final decision for a couple weeks, but here goes. I'm running this past my fellow Massassians first before I hit up eBay.

It's a white polycarbonite Macbook, circa late 2008 IIRC. It was the last model before the 13" aluminum Macbooks arrived.

Specs:
2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR2 800mhz RAM
120GB HD
13" Screen
Intel X3100 Graphics (not as bad as the old horrid GMA 950's, but still not a gaming chip at all)
Ports: 2 USB 2.0, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 firewire 400, headphone, microphone (both have optical capability), Mini-DVI, Magsafe Power
DVD burner drive of some speed (like all Macs have had for centuries)
10.5 Leopard

Includes original install DVDs, the AC adapter + its small plug adapter, and maybe even the box if I can find it. I will also throw in all the Mini-DVI adapters (DVI, VGA and Composite/SVideo out), to make that port useful.

There is absolutely nothing functionally wrong with the laptop. The screen is in perfect condition (if albeit a little dirty), all ports and drives work, and battery is not dead. The system has sat plugged in for about a year and a half now as an HTPC.

It is a used laptop, and as such has a few scuffs, but the only true damage is a small cracked off piece of plastic at the bottom edge below the keyboard. I will include photos later, including this small defect. It was not dropped ever, this "damage" was due to normal wear, thank Apple for that crack.

Based on some initial looking around on eBay, I am looking for $500 + shipping. I will only charge you the actual shipping cost, I'm not looking to make money that way. I think this is a fair deal when combined with the included (expensive) adapters and the install media.

I'll take $5, but I don't know why you just gave me $5 for. Thanks though! *sticks in wallet*

I'm in no quick hurry to get rid of this, so if you think you might be able to cobble it up in a month or so, we can do that. If you're interested.

I think I must have an identical one to yours. I upgraded my RAM to 4gb for pretty cheap because I was running a lot of crap in vms for work. Let me know if you get $500 for it; I might consider selling mine for that price so I have more money for my boat. Mine is also in good shape (minus the crack, plus a spider man sticker that my son put on it).

it seems to me that the spiderman sticker should be the selling point.
I'm proud of my life and the things that I have done, proud of myself and the loner I've become.

My girlfriend needs a new laptop - her 4ish year old macbook is dying (at least 3 or 4 times a week it just won't power up no matter what we try. We try again later and it boots fine) and between paying her way through college and rent she can't afford a new (as in one that isn't hers, not as in brand-spanking-new) one.

Is there any wiggle room in the $500?

[edit - Oh snap, I'd pay 10 grand if it had a spiderman sticker on it]

Sure, you ca--- OH WAIT IT'S SOLD FOR $500 ALREADY.

Suck it PC users, Macs sell for insane amounts even used. :neckbeard:

Since they sell for insane amounts unused, that's only fair.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Hey, I wouldn't get near a 50% return on a regular laptop this old, no matter what the cost.
2011-03-04, 7:30 PM #20
So you sold it through ebay, does that mean you have the money already? Is it possible to get ripped off at this point? What % goes to ebay?
2011-03-04, 9:04 PM #21
The actual listing cost ~$3. I think they charge some percentage of the sale when it's over, but I've yet to be charged, so we'll see (might be because of this being my first sale ever or something).

As for being ripped off, not exactly.

A. I am already paid via PayPal, so it's not like I'm shipping before payment.
B. The only return I allow is if it is DOA, at which they have to ship it back to me within 3 days at their expense. Essentially this would be the only exploit, which would be to say "eh I don't want it now *SMASH*". I could probably fight that anyway.
C. I am sending the package complete with tracking number, signature required, and insurance, so I know he's going to get it and can't screw me over that way.

Ebay will take their substantial chunk in a couple weeks, somewhere around 9% if I remember right. That's on top of the paypal fees.
"Honey, you got real ugly."

In a couple weeks? No wonder, that's stupid. They should take it immediately. Doesn't really matter though.
