Do the volkswagon people totally not get their own thing? Or have I been mistaken my entire life?

Volkswagon is running commercials where people do the punchbuggy thing when seeing some generic compact car that is certainly NOT a bug.

If you used the proper term (slug bug) you'd have answered your own question.

They do get it. They're trying to expand it to be their entire line. It's called marketing.

Is 'vw bug' supposed to mean Volkswagen Beetle?

Over here we don't do it for Volkswagen Beetles, but Citroën Ducks. (2CVs) Especially green ones. Also, we don't punch, we pinch.

I've never heard the term 'slug bug' and I doubt I'll ever hear the term again...

mb is right though, they're trying a marketing ploy, but to me if it's not a bug it's not punch-worthy

No, I know the yellow mini game. First person to spot a yellow car or a mini and call it, gets to punch the other on the arm. A yellow mini somehow gives the spotter the right to deliver two exceptionally hard punches. Depending on the person, they may play this for life.

It's the same here, but with VW bugs ("punch buggy" or "slug bug") instead of minis. And I don't think there's any preference with yellow cars.

GREEN(/YELLOW/ETC) PUNCH BUGGY NO PUNCH BACKS! (was a standard in my family on every road trip. My brother hit hard)
