I find it hilarious that people I know are gushing about HDMI output on the damn thing when, in typical Apple fashion, it requires a $40 adapter to use it...

What are the alternatives to the iPad?

(Serious question, I'm thinking of getting a tablet and would really love to hear some recommendations. What's Android like as an OS? Is there a Windows based tablet? Is there any way of getting iPad apps to run on non iPads (there are a number of really good kids apps apparently for iPad)? etc...)
2011-03-02, 5:16 PM #10
Alternatives to my knowledge are Android and HP's webOS tablet. webOS wins hands down for usability (even compared to iOS, it does a lot of things really well) and having an integrated experience but has fewer apps. Android's an app powerhouse because of all the cool homebrew (which is on webOS too, but less so because of the small community). If you want a huge breadth of cool apps, Android's the way to go.

Or if you want a Windows one with a kickass stylus and digitizer, and don't mind ****ty battery life, get an Asus EP121!

Now if Amazon would only get more of them in stock...

My favorite part is actually the little folding cover --> stand accessory thing. That thing is clever.

Good news, I've definitely been looking for some alternatives to your knowledge.

What's clever is Apple charging the absolutely :downs: prices for it.

$39 for the ugly version, $69 for the leather decent one.

And it's just a cover, too, not a case.
2011-03-02, 6:59 PM #15
Mm my willingness to pay is > $39 so I'm good there

(Except I don't have an iPad and probably won't get one cuz I have an MBA el oh el)

Alternatives to his knowledge usually involve hefty amts of Omnegang or Unibroue

It's my one reservation to getting an iPad, actually. I use Flash content that often.

No, but using the Skyfire application allows one to view Flash videos by transcoding them in to HTML5. At least this is what I've read (I don't actually use Flash myself). There's also iSwifter.
? :)

I'm not a fan of Apple, so not interested. Actually my anti-Apple-ness is kind of disproportionate to what actually annoys me about them, but I blame that on having to hear people go on about their products.

The only interest I would have had in an iPad would have been as an e-reader, and it's pretty crappy for that. The less expensive ones (Kindle, nook, Kobo, etc) are much better for that use, and for A LOT less money.

So... I'm not quite sure why I clicked on the thread... maybe just to spread my hate. :)

Even as an Apple fanboi I admit that I don't really want one. If I were given one for free, or at least a massive discount I'd not turn up my nose at one.

This applies to all tablets though, not just the iPad.

Speaking from experience, Skyfire is pretty awful. I would say it supports transcoding about 15% of sites using Flash video.

I really want a tablet for one purpose. And I just don't see spending $600 for something I'd use to browse Reddit on the toilet.

That's ****ty. Have you tried iSwifter? In theory it sounds like a good service but I haven't actually tried it.

I must say that I disagree with everyone that claims that the iPad isn't a good eBook reader. I wouldn't say that it's exceptional in that particular area but it's decent at worst. I've been using mine to read eBooks since it came out & have been very much satisfied with it. iBooks is a great application & even moreso since they added PDF support (you're no longer hassled with the irritation of converting all of your books to ePub) & post-it notes.

I think that I've used my iMac maybe 5 or 6 times since I've purchased my iPad. It's obviously not a fully functional computer but I've found that I rarely even need one anymore. I'm actually thinking about selling my desktop.
? :)

I don't have an iOS device so no. (Skyfire is on Android as well, that's where I've used it)

There's a few things bad about using it as a ebook reader:

1. Despite the nice screen, it's still a screen. It wears on the eyes, and isn't all that easy to see in daylight.
2. iBooks has an awful small selection compared to Amazon AND B&N.
3. iBooks is one of the few things that purposefully breaks using the new jailbreak methods.
2011-03-06, 7:48 AM #35
The only application for an iPad that really interests me is music. I'd rather have it to play with Garage Band and that moog app than read a book.

Also is it just me, or does anyone else prefer to read books on paper?

I've never used an ebook reader before so I don't really know how different it is from a book as far as experience. The convenience of not having to carry around big books all the time is nice though.
2011-03-06, 8:51 AM #37
The best thing about the iPad 2 is that the first-gen iPads are now going for a steal. Unimpressed with the iPad 2 upgrades, I was thinking of holding out for the HP TouchPad, but webOS doesn't have the developers that Android or iOS has, despite it having a very good UI. Also, $499 for a 16GB tablet is still steep, however, $320 for a 32GB iPad 1 isn't too bad.

How much is the ipad2 going for? I saw a poster last night for someone selling a first gen for 475

The iPad 2 starts at $499 (+ applicable sales tax, unless you buy it from Amazon). I've seen first-gens go as low as $225 on eBay.

So much better. As far as readability goes, they're almost equal. Not to mention an eBook reader typically weighs less than the physical form of the book you would be reading, which makes reading much less annoying, especially if for example you're trying to read while laying back in bed.

But I agree with you that iPads and such are crappy for reading. If you have any desire for eBook reading, just spend the $140-$150 and get a wifi Kindle or original Nook and it'll be a much better experience.
