If you guys could take 5-10 minutes to fill out this survey, it would help me out tremendously. It's for my advertising class, and it's about bookstores and e-readers.

Thanks, you guys are the best.

Took it. Some of the options would be better served by checkboxes, I believe, such as "Where do you buy books: Store/Online."

Good luck!

"Why do you read" should be checkboxes.

Yeah checkboxes would be much better.

Best of luck! I filled it out. Depending on your timeline, I could see if I could get a romance novel blog (with an audience of a few thousand, and these people have STRONG opinions on bookstores and e-readers) to post it. Again, only if it's not something that needs to be done asap.

Hmm... seems like that would cause huge sampling issues

Like bias towards a specific genre? Because asking this site tends to edge up on a similar bias :P

No, 17.8% of Americans are actually Canucks, Finns, or Brits. I already accounted for that.

Thanks, I got all the responses I needed. To make this thread relevant, do any of you think the book will go the way of the Walkman or typewriter, or will there always be a future for physical books? I personally think they will become a classy commodity, much like how film is being phased out in favor of digital video.

P.S. I particularly liked the Mein Kampf comment in the survey.

I for one am afraid of the digital age (of books).
2011-03-17, 2:39 PM #28
I've been debating getting a Kindle/Nook for a while, but I love being able to hold a book and abuse it by folding the front cover all the way back or even writing in them. I also love the smell and the feel of the pages. But the problem becomes I have waaaaay too many books. Having them all on one eletronic thing would be nice and convenient. I'll probably only start using one if someone gets one for me. Kind of how I did with the iPod. >_>

The thing for me though is that I only read one book at a time, unlike music where I skip albums around constantly. I don't really see the benefit of having my entire library with me... and besides, people love showing off their book collection in their homes.

a) when I go on trips, I bring several books, so it's much handier to have the Nook.

b) while I usually only read one fiction book at a time, I often have a history book I keep putting down, then going back to, so I'm usually carrying around at least 2 at once.

c) I hate the fact that reading books over and over again causes them damage over time. I then sadly look at my well loved books and the abuse it looks like they've gone through even though I'm careful. It's stupid, I know, but it gets on my nerves.

I do love holding a book, and I love browsing though a bookstore (much easier than browsing an online selection) and I do miss both of those, but I was surprised at how little I missed having a physical book when reading on an e-reader. I still do miss it from time to time, but having the Nook doesn't mean I can't pick up a physical book for time to time as well, when the mood strikes.

This brings us to a larger question: When everything is digital in a few years, what will our homes be full of? Seriously.

Well I don't think physical books will ever go away - much like we still use radios, even though we all have TV's. There will always be forms or paperwork you need a physical copy of, the empty soda bottles will always litter my desk, clothes probably won't be digitized, bunches of random cords you have no idea what they go to anymore will probably still be around, at least for a while, remote controls are getting silly, at least in my house, pictures, knick knacks, etc...

(I've thought about this, at legnth, before :P)

I just got a NookColor myself. Like sugarless, I love the feel of real books, and browsing in a bookstore, but the Nook is superconvenient, especially when one is as prolific a reader as I am.

Until nooks start to smell like old books I will continue to buy from used book stores.

Speak for yourself! I haven't listened to actual radio in 6 months. I always listen to Pandora anymore. I don't even really watch tv anymore, except for house.

I don't think I know anyone who owns a radio outside of their car
