Looking for inexpensive sound card
2011-03-16, 9:24 AM #1
i'm looking for a cheap (price not quality) sound card that has S/PDIF out, so i can hook up to my receiver via optical cable, since the stupid thing doesnt do HDMI audio. Right now since it does pass through the HDMI audio, i have to have my television on in order to hear sound output from the computer. I had RCA cables going to it for a while, but i'd like to get (at least) 5.1 sound.

Heres what i'm looking at currently:

or

i'm trying to keep it under $100. Any tips or recommendations appreciated.

Have you thought about a motherboard swap? I don't know what you'd need so I have no idea what that expense might be.

Why would I do that? Nothing is wrong with the mobo.

He wants to run the audio without needing to keep his TV on.

S/PDIF output without the need for a separate audio card. Just have no idea how the costs would compare.

I found a Rocketfish card a while back in the $30 range at Best Buy that had optical out. The times I've used its optical output, I've not had any complaints.

the problem is far too many TVs will not pass through AC3 or DTS from HDMI input... they will only do 2ch PCM

You really don't need much for an optical out.

Analog quality probably sucks but it's cheap. It's a VIA chip so Windows will probably have drivers for it out of the box.

I have an audigy 2 on windows 7, I'm not sure why since I also have a motherboard with onboard sound. I'm too lazy to take it out though.
