Whats "too serious" to joke about?
2011-03-16, 10:01 PM #1
Anything?

Personally I think there are wrong times to joke about things, but that doesnt mean you shouldn't joke about things.

What do you think?

I'm not sure. Maybe if an tsunami just occurred somewhere and killed thousands of people you shouldn't say: 'damn, I wish I brought my surfboard. Those were killer waves, man.'

I don't think anything is too serious to be joked about. There are absolutely things that are completely distasteful to joke about, the holocaust, rape, Charlie sheen... But if someone wants to be a dick and joke about them they can.

Speaking of Charlie sheen... How much cocaine has that guy snorted?

Okay so a priest and a rabbi are at a wedding.

The priest sees this adorable little alter boy bend over to pick up a flower petal.

The priest says to the rabbi, "Man I'd like to screw that kid!"

So the rabbi says, "Out of what?"

haha. Here's a few more

I got a dog the other day. I call him Mohammed because I had to Muzzle-Him.

I was walking down the street earlier and saw a really fat girl. She was wearing a t-shirt that said "i love hip hop".

I think the letters C and S had fallen off.

I find epileptic girls fit.

I think nothing is too serious to joke about and if people whine about it I say WAAHHHHHH

Absolutely nothing.

Depends on the time of the joke, true intent of the one making the joke and pretty much telling it to the right people. Among other things.

For instance, in my opinion, jokes about Nazis - as in, jokes ridiculing the Nazis - are pretty much funny no matter what because (paraphrasing Mel Brooks here) if you ridicule the hell out of Nazis, no one will take them seriously anymore. Except for similar degenerates, in which case you should ridicule thell out of them.

Jokes for shock value get lame and boring after awhile, anyway. Nothing gets built up for a "punchline" or whatever. I've seen shows, shorts, routines and animation where they try to be as offensive as possible for "comedic value," and they all fall flat quickly. Good for the initial offering I guess, but then I get offended, but for a different reason.

Same goes for comedians who joke about race over and over in order to get that "oh no you didn't!!!" or "you didn't just go there!!!" effect. I've seen few people make a routine with jokes about 9/11 and that's all. Banking on controversy won't stop the material from being offensively sucking.

I think making jokes about things in general is pretty much whatever-goes. It's only when you start making jokes about specific atrocities that you've probably crossed a line. Especially if you haven't let the 'too soon' period run its course.

Sometimes crossing that line is still funny, to certain people, but you'd better have some fine comedy craftsmanship to pull it off without enraging half your audience.

I agree with this, but I would extend it to say that the audience is very important. You shouldn't make jokes about things that have affected the people around you, e.g. 9/11, rape etc.

I don't know where I left it, but I recall reading a study that said laughter is basically a modified response to discomfort and low-level fear at having attention drawn to you.

Keeping that in mind, if jokes are intended to induce laughter, an historically aversive response in species related to humans... then most anything is game.

*shrug*

That being said, I wouldn't make Dead Baby jokes around anybody who had aborted, miscarried, or lost a child. :-/

This is exactly how I feel. I think you should be able to joke about anything you want, but that doesn't mean it's going to be funny. Cheap jokes are bland and well... cheap. I recently had someone tell me that jokes about race were acceptable, but jokes about diseases like obesity were too insensitive. That seems like a weird line to draw.

Also I'm curious, how soon is too soon? I guess Gilbert Godfried would be a good person to ask about that :ninja:

I would say if your joke hurts someone beyond just wounding their ego or 'offending their sensibilities' then you went too far.

The person who decides if something is offensive isn't the offender, it's the offendee. Everything is offensive to someone. You can either say nothing at all or stop worrying about it, and make the people who aren't turds laugh.

Yes, but just because one can be a jackass doesn't mean one should. And if you are, other people certainly have the right to criticize you for it.
