Upgrading Netbook?
2011-03-23, 10:32 PM #1
I realize that netbooks aren't supposed to have a ton of processing power, but any site with any sort of front page content (like a news site, msnbc, cnn, etc) simply brings the PC to a halt. It gets real slow while loading and once it loads I can't scroll from the top of the bottom of the site without the whole computer pausing and loading. It makes it such a pain in the ass to use sometimes. I see that I can buy RAM for this thing....would a change from 1gb to 2gb be worth it? Asus Eee, 1 or 2 years old. Windows XP.

Ram is cheap, go for it.

Won't likely change much, to be honest. Welcome to the world of netbooks.

Unless you're swapping it won't help. Find out if you're swapping before spending a dollar.

What browser are you using when it starts to go to a crawl? Let me guess, firefox? It's such a whore.

My gut says it's not worth it. 1gb should be plenty for XP and the lightweight tasks Netbooks are designed for. I would think something like a HDD->SSD swap or maybe trying a netbook optimized version of Linux would provide a more enjoyable experience.

But ram is cheap and upgrading to 2gb is simple, so give it a shot.

At 1GB you're almost certainly swapping. I noticed a fairly substantial increase upgrading my netbook to 2GB

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just wondering what applications your using on your netbook that are consuming this amount of memory. The only time I really notice it are when I'm running Flash based games.

Visual Studio, Chrome. The overhead of the OS doesn't help given how slow the CPU is
