Anyone else saw it? I really wanted to like this movie after being amazed by the trailers from last year. Unfortunately, the critics seem to be right about the movie's lack of effective plot and character development. Yes you can try to enjoy it as a brainless action film, but it seems like the film was trying to convey a strong message that I'm not quite getting (use your imagination to find peace?). What was strange was that there were more scenes of girls crying than I thought there would be. For what it's worth, I do really like the opening and the rendition of Sweet Dreams sung by Emily Browning.

But here the thing about the action, it didn't really impress me either. If you have seen the trailers, you have actually witness all the action sequences for the most part. Slow motion was put to much gratuitous use compared to 300 and Watchmen. I mean don't get me wrong, there are certain scenes where there are some impressive shots (you can kind of see them from the trailer). But overall, the choreography leave a lot more to be desire from. Personally I would have given Babydoll dual 1911 pistols to make her more stylish.

Side note, Abbie Cornish looked the most convincing as an action heroine out of the bunch in my opinion.

An interesting theory about the movie's story. However, it's only a theory and doesn't change the fact that I still think the plot was poorly executed.

Do you mean choreography or cinematography?
2011-03-25, 6:51 PM #3
Well what do you expect, the plot's only purpose is to fictionalize monarch mind control type programs to keep the general public underfoot.

vigilantcitizen.com will have an article about it i just know it

That's too bad to hear. The trailers had made it look interesting. I guess I'll be saving this one for netflix.

No doubt. From the trailer, I'd been planning to watch it every day for the first week. :/

Zack Snyder's use of slow-motion gets worse with each movie he makes.

They were good in Dawn of the Dead. It worked for 300. They were shoe-horned into Watchmen. They were almost unpleasantly awkward in Legend of the Guardians.

I almost don't even want to watch Sucker Punch. And I'm expecting Superman to be a 70-minute movie with no less than 20 minutes of slow-motion shots.
2011-03-26, 7:21 AM #7
Jon'C, I'm talking about choreography. I was overall expecting more stylish moves pulled by Babydoll and gang. The cinematography wasn't really that bad. Though, I did not like the use of the shaky cam in the zombie Nazi soldier action sequence.

The advantage Superman will have is that the script isn't done by him (David Goyer is writing it). Sucker Punch was mainly written by him with some collaboration by a friend of his.

I've got no problem with his movies in terms of script and how they tell their stories.

I'm just so ****ing tired of slow motion. And Snyder puts it in everything.

Which will be completely obliterated once the opening credits, which will be in slow motion as well, finish rolling.

Seemingly "hot" girls with swords, dragons and mech's. Sounds like the ingredients to a cliché geek dinner.

I did not like 300. Nor Sin City. Watchmen was only ok, due to the awesome source material.

At the end of the day Zack Snyder is aesthetically pleasing, yet the beauty of his film is only skin deep. When Snyder finally does decide to do a movie with substance, I will be there ready to accept it with open arms.

Anyone who sees this movie and expects something else is fooling themselves. A geek dinner isn't necessarily a bad thing, but don't expect anything else.

I disagree about the slow motion. I felt, while still used, it was more tame here then in 300.

300 went way overboard on the slow motion, and I think the movie would've been super short without.

Sucker Punch had it, but it didn't feel as much to me.

I thought the movie was pretty good overall. Still, I can see the complaints cause it's hard to become invested in the characters

I'm wondering what the hell sin city has to do with this movie

Yeah, I though he was a screenwriter on that one. Apologies.

Hey, she was my favorite (though she looks better as a blonde). You sure you're not thinking of Dakota Fanning or Amanda Seyfried?

Watchmen didn't count? He was rather faithful with the material I thought.

I thought Watchmen was about as good as it possibly could have been.

Yeah, watchmen was cool, but only because, like i said, the source material was so good.

I was still waiting for the giant squid or at the end of the film...

Ditto times a million. The only thing I didn't like about Watchmen was the soundtrack blaring "HEY LOOK THIS MOVIE IS SET IN THE PAST IN CASE YOU FORGOT" tones, the Sound of Silence part in particular (a song I rather like). I wish they had kept with a more instrumental score of their own -- I even loved the use of Muse in their trailers.

Sucker Punch doesn't seem like my kind of movie, regardless of its quality. Otherwise, I would probably try to ignore reviews until I saw it for myself (for example, I really rather liked Tron: Legacy, which was rather torn up by reviews, as well as a number of other movies in the past like *gasp* the Matrix sequels!)

That's one thing you can simultaneously praise and slam Snyder about, is his use of soundtrack. He's definitely got a very "**** you, I'll do whatever I want" attitude about the music in his movies, and this shows up the most in Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen. Sometimes it works. E.g. The Down With the Sickness cover in Dawn of the Dead or the Johnny Cash song over the opening credits... I think it's "When the Man Comes Around." Sometimes it really doesn't work. E.g. 99 Luftballoons toward the start of Watchmen. Or Halleluja during the sex scene in Watchmen.

I hear he goes pretty balls to the wall with the soundtrack choices in this new one, and it had a lot of people *****ing about it in reviews.

EDIT: And if you don't like the use of "I'm Your Boogy Man" during the police strike riots in Watchmen, I don't know what to do for you.

Positive. I was actually surprised. I seen the trailers and was like, who the hells that girl? Never saw her before but when I seen other pics of her... Yeah the blonde makes her look like a totally different person. Although yeah the other two girls you mentioned are equally as unattractive to me.

**** YAH! I am actually wearing a t-shirt of the original Tron (regardless of what THEY may say, it is the ****). I though Legacy was pretty awesome. The effects of young Jeff Bridges were so-so, but despite the movies somewhat ridiculous plot, it remains a good action movie. The matrix sequels (while not as good as the first) were still awesome. I was 9 when I saw the first film. The premise of neo flying at the end was, to me, the "sweetest" (3rd grade adj) thing ever. From that point, I was destined to love anything that followed.

But there were concepts that the squid offered.

The thing about Dr. Manhattan being the target for the blame would mean America would be the ones everyone would eventually point fingers to. He was their American weapon, it would be their responsibility for him "going out of control" and "blowing things up." The squid was a foreign element.

Yes, but remember, everyone had already been turned against him for the whole cancer thing. And how do you mean eventually? The story of what really happened was going to come out as soon as the newspaper printed a story about Rorshach's journal.

ECHOMAN, from the way I read it, your post seems to only reinforce my point >_>
(but Antony, ECHOMAN was saying eventually they'd blame America, not just Dr. Manhattan).

I disagree, deadman. The idea was to unite everyone against Dr Manhattan. It's not really any different than the space squid thing.

Not that it matters, though, like I said, because of the journal.
