Refresh rate?
2011-03-31, 3:39 PM #1
Hey guys. I bought a monitor recently, I cant remember if was last year or 2 years ago.. :omg:

Anyway it's a ViewSonic VX2433wm. 24 inch 1080 and the picture is BEAUTIFUL. But I think the refresh rate is really low. The highest I can set it to is 60 hz.. wtf? This can cause issues if I am watching a movie or playing a game because i can see this line going through the middle of the screen. I downloaded the latest drivers for my GFX card and that didn't fix it, and I also downloaded the latest drivers for the monitor. Still no go. Am I screwed on this? Should I buy a new monitor? Massassi input is always appreciated :tfti:

60hz is not an issue for anything except for 24p (usually cinematic) movies. There are extremely few computer LCDs that will even do anything over 60 because there's no real point.

A line through the middle of the screen does not sound like a refresh rate issue at all. Typically you'd see screen tearing if you were running at a higher fps than the refresh rate. And that is assuming VSync was off.

You can try turning VSync on anyway and see if that line you're talking about goes away. If it doesn't, then you know it isn't refresh rate at all. It would be easiest to turn it on in games or force it on in the GFX control panel.

There are programs to force your refresh rate, but use caution because I used one once and I couldn't get into windows because my monitor kept telling me it didn't support the refresh rate.

If that happens go into safemode, don't change your resolution in safemode, but access the program and just undid what you did through there, because that apparently takes priority over the actual video settings.

Thanks CM, I figured it was refresh rate. I was doing a sega emulator and it was really tearing through the middle bad! VSync was off, so I will test that see if it fixes it.

As for movies, is anything I can do there? I was using the latest Media Player and VLC.

Well, in countries where the power grid runs on 50 hz we just change the shutter speed.

I suggest you e-mail the makers of the films you ware watching and ask them to reshoot in another shutter speed.

LCD displays (in the US) all run at 60Hz or a multiple of 60Hz (120,240,480)

also refresh rate doesn't have the kind of impact on LCD as it does on CRT

I get the annoying line/tearing even watching youtube videos and stuff. It's annoying but most people don't seem to notice it.

Yea, I get it with youtube as well. I guess its just a common thing then. Oh well.

btw VSync did fix the issue with the emulators, thanks CM
