I bought a cool old thing.

So I was rolling around ebay looking for neat things to buy, and a I picked up a 13 year old Thinkpad for 30 bucks. A neat toy for the price. I'll probably be mucking about with old operating systems I haven't been able to try (OS/2 Warp baby!) and old games that don't work well in Dosbox. I was just wondering if any of you who had been gamers around that time have any suggestions. And feel free to talk about cool ancient electronics too, I find older computer equipment interesting.

...Jedi Knight is 13 years old.

Yeah, but this model only has a 2 meg video card, totally incapable of 3D accel. Dark Forces will work well though.

If you haven't ever played JK at low res without 3D acceleration, you haven't really played JK.

I remember the first time I played JK with hardware accelaration after I bought my voodoo3 and I couldn't believe how awesome it looked.

If I was looking for something older to play DOS games, I think I would want a desktop with a real SoundBlaster Pro/16. I'm guessing your looking for mostly singleplayer games. I would try some of these if you havent already:

Willy Beamish (evil copy protection)
Space Quest Series
Alone in the Dark I/II
Prince of Persia
Wing Commander
BattleTech - The Crescent Hawks Inception (evil copy protection)
Rise of the Dragon

When I say 'evil copy protection' I mean you need the manual or a code wheel to answer questions.

My own recent old tech story:
I was fixing a Dell Latitude C610 Laptop (P3 1gz, 384mb ram) this weekend. It was beat-to-hell, both the DVD and harddrive needed replacing. I told the owner that the messenger bag she was using to carry it around was worth more than the laptop, that she should just invest in something new.

Same. My experience was on a Rendition Verite 2100 and it could only handle 512x384 at playable fps, but even that was amazing.

I have an IBM that's older than that in my closet still. The battery had to be thrown away, it leaked. The rest of it is still functional. Wanna buy it? :P

IIRC, it has:

486 DX 75mhz
24MB RAM (8+16 added later)
<1GB hard drive, I can't remember exactly
Dial up connector, it runs Win95, and it can play JK at 20fps with the lowest settings and resolution. It'll play MP3s in DOS. It came with an external floppy drive which I also may have, but can't guarantee works.
