Gold hits 1500$ an oz.

So gold hit 1500$ an ounce which is apparently a historic high.
Just out of curiosity anyone own any gold or other precious metals?
Or had any crazy luck in other types of investments?

I have 20 oz of silver. Bought it at 11$ an ounce and it's now at 45$
Pretty nifty return I think.

I have a rather large collection of gold. I also have a small nuclear warhead.

My wife has a gold Napoleon coin along with several pieces of gold jewelry but they're all sentimental & we aren't even interested in knowing their worth.
? :)

I guess I could melt all these old electronics and get the gold/silver/heavy metals out.
don't breath this.

No you can't.

that actually would be really difficult. you can sell circuit boards that have gold pins for some fairly good monies though.

Basically everything you buy today will be copper and tin (or silver, ~4-8%) immersion-plated because it forms better connections with modern solder. This is after etching and laminating. I would be surprised if a modern motherboard, say, is even worth a metal reclaimer's effort.

He did say "old electronics"

But yeah, I would completely agree about anything made recently.

I'd say that applies to anything made while Tibby was alive, too. Plus you can't just melt it down. Good luck trying to extract 2 grams of gold out of 20 pounds of slag.

Aqua regia or sodium cyanide solution, a steel cathode, some source of current and a tool to file the gold leaf off the cathode. Or some other chemical to precipitate the gold out (something-meta-something) and a way to safely dispose of your solvent. Obviously, you also need to have both the crippling poverty for this to be worth your time, and a stockpile of very expensive chemicals and equipment which you for some reason can't just resell.

I'm still interested to see if silver is so high because of a bubble, or because it really has been undervalued compared to gold, like the survivalist crazies I know keep saying. It should not be a surprise to anyone that I talk to these people.

Actually, you have no return if you haven't sold it.

Yeah, it is, if by "metal reclaimer" you mean 3rd world worker who doesn't have a problem burning PCBs on open flames all day long.

.......except you can't get the gold or silver out that way.

They rip the chips off first, and then burn the PCBs to siphon off the solder.

Suddenly free WoW gold looks like a pretty good deal.
