How to protect your hard drive?

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a good software package where I can protect the hard drive on machine so that people cant access it in the case of theft. Trying to protect some condifential stuff on my computer, that has to be on that machine but I cant risk it being used agaisnt me, or atleast I need something to generate time to change passwords or bank stuff.

Thanks in advance.

I like TrueCrypt. Very easy to use.

If you're on a mac and haven't mentioned you can use the in-built disk utility to create encrypted disk images that you can mount like a virtual USB drive.

now be very careful you always press that button

Oh wait, that wouldn't help in case of theft. Explosives.
