I hate how people latch onto some minor thing like a denied vacation and are insultingly presumptuous in portraying it as the sole reason for a suicide. It's just not that simple or insensible.

I would have just told them I already have money down on it. He probably told them about it three days prior or something. Its amazing how many people think that is acceptable in the workplace.

Either way that sucks that he only made it to the 108th. I would be afterlife-pissed.

Indeed. There was certainly more to it than that. The denied vacation was probably ****-icing on the ****-cake.
? :)

I worked for a company once (200,000 employees mind you) whose policy was that if you requested for a vacation (these requests went through a 3rd party) & didn't hear anything back, you were approved. We complained & complained about how stupid this was (for obvious reasons) but it fell on deaf ears. Not only was it a bad policy, but there was no way to check on the status of your request. You seriously just had to go on vacation & hope that you were approved. Guess what? Countless people were fired because they went on vacation & didn't find out that they were denied until they were either already on vacation or returning from one. This happened to a good friend of mine. He worked for the company for 3 years, saved up a month worth of vacation time (there was no rule against using it all at once), filed his request (a month before), went to Brazil & weeks later received a call stating that he was terminated for leaving without being approved. This is a guy with 3 children & a wife that live in another country that he sends money to on a regular basis.

In other words, there are a lot of companies in this country that probably aren't like companies that you've worked for & things probably aren't as cut & dry as you're used to them being. I don't know the circumstances of this guys case but I could imagine the possibility of it being worse than it sounds as far as his vacation predicament.
? :)

Because American workplace policy is going to be exactly the same as the wacko schemes in Dubai?
nope.

so... not to sound too insensitive, but if he was going to kill himself anyways, why didnt he go ahead and take the vacation... and then kill himself.

Yes. Because someone about to kill themselves is thinking rationally.

Oddly, the article gives us all a reason for suicide.

"South Asian Background." Depending on their definition, it COULD mean that he worked at Foxconn... And, well, we've seen that they're pretty prone to jumping from buildings.

And yes, one must remember that not all company vacation policies are as nice and clear as those which many of us might've grown to take for granted. ESPECIALLY when we're dealing with companies in other countries.

As for smacking into the 108th floor deck, it'd be kinda hard to get a way to fall all the way down, given that the structure's tapered along most of its sides.

^^South Asian typically means Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi.

I can imagine a stressful situation where taking the leave was absolutely necessary, as was keeping the job. Being denied vacation screwed up whatever the real problem was.

We have that same policy; except, if they fail to explicitly tell us no, it is approved. So they can't decide to deny it after we're already on vacation.

Ahhh, the wonders of unionization!

Well at least we can all agree that film is terrible. In other horrid Tom Cruise news how about Tom Cruise as Robocop? Depp? Reeves? Good God, give me a building!

It's worth noting that apparently Foxconn had also been caught trying to more-or-less enslave some 300 Indian employees of theirs... And they have operations throughout the third- and former second- worlds. So you never know... Or, of course, it could've been someone just as horrible an employer as Foxconn, just without the high profile granted by virtue of being the assembly contractor for almost all high-tech devices...

Not necessarily. There's a video of a base jump from the Burj Khalifa tower here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0vQvHdN5qA (skip to 4:16 to go past the bla bla).
