Sounds pretty fun. I'm interested to see if we'll be able to download the OS and install it on our own devices, or if it'll be locked to the hardware.

Chromebook on a tablet computer would be awesome.

They are pretty awesome, ZZT, me, and a couple other people have the pilot program versions. You can allready download the OS and install it through ChromiumOS

Sweet. I reckon I'll have a crack at installing it on something at work tomorrow.

Frankly, I think the tablet defeats the purpose of these. They're not proper laptops, so they're no good for that. Even as far as netbooks go they're limited. Their featureset sits more in line with a tablet, except a tablet is far more useful.

Not to mention selling them for $350 bare minimum for consumers is just laughable.

Really? $350+?

How? From the pictures I've seen, the actual laptop looks flimsy as hell.

I heard they start at closer to $450. Even worse.

I don't see why I would want a machine that only ran web apps.
2011-05-16, 5:33 AM #11
Are these things really going to be that expensive?

Their promotional video essentially implies they're disposable. I was expecting a much lower pricepoint given the functionality. Everyone would be better off buying proper tablets and laptops, especially when the cost far exceeds the novelty.

Yup, $350. $500 is you want a 3G one. And the "free 3G" it comes with is a whopping 100 MB a month.

The education and business deals start at $20/$28 a month respectively and both require 3 year contracts, so a TCO of $720/$1008 for those. They're not going to be cheap.

And what happens when you dont have internet access? It's completely useless.

That's why you buy one with 3g. Or not at all.

it's a great idea at a terrible price point

Mostly, but not entirely. Some of the webapps will still function without internet (Google Docs, GMail for instance). You just won't be able to upload or send mail obviously.

Yeah I mean for the same price as one of these, you could buy a decent laptop with windows 7 and just install chrome. 3G isn't totally necessary unless you live in BFE, I mean I can't go anywhere without being surrounded by wifi networks.

I wont lie though, I tried really hard to get in the beta program for a CR-48, then shortly after I almost bought one off craigslist for $350 but im so glad I didn't.

Here are some specs for the initial ones:
Samsung: http://www.google.com/chromebook/#chromebooks-samsung
Acer: http://www.google.com/chromebook/#chromebooks-acer

$350 is a pretty high price-point. I'll have to agree with CM, without the tablet features, it just seems underwhelming.

EDIT: Looks like there are more on amazon with specs, just no prices. The theme seems to be Intel Atom with ~16 GB SSD.

They're trying to be Internet Appliances of the late 90's (yuck), while also trying to tout them as thin clients to businesses, except businesses can get thin clients with better features (stuff like 2+ monitor outputs) for similar prices.
2011-05-16, 5:30 PM #21
Also, it can still get viruses.

I always just assumed if you are into business (and not the Soho-wannabe type), you would just get a Thinkpad. Stereotyping, I know.

'Omg epic necro post Triscuit! Way to revive a dead thread! Why didnt you just start a new one. Noob.'

I'm curious any of you guys who were in on the pilot program, still using a Chromebook? Have your feelings about the software or hardware changed? Other than faster boot times and better security is there any benefit to using a Chromebook vs typical netbook with 'Chrome Browser + Chrome WebApps'?

I don't have one, but from what I hear, unless you plan on ONLY BROWSING THE INTERNET it's basically a waste of money.

I've used one.

Pretty much. My Pilot program one is pretty much delegated to "I need an internet device bigger then my phone but I need to be in the living room instead of on my desktop."

Right. And at this point you have to ask yourself, "Do I want a tiny chromebook that literally can only browse the web, or would I rather have an iPad that actually manages to have MORE functionality, smaller, lighter and lasts longer". It's not like a normal laptop at all.

Every time I see a thread started by Jin I have a strange moment where I think 'When did I start that thread???' before I notice it's an in not an m.
