Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

Being that I went to a midnight showing I thought I'd take the opportunity to actually post a movie thread. Spoilers below, so dont read on if you've moused over...

I enjoyed it overall, though its really, really just like the others. Luckily its mostly the good parts of the others. Mermaids were new though, the first one that showed up rather stunned me with how hot she was. Blackbeards first couple of scenes were pretty awesome but then he just kept beating the same drum. I saw no previews or anything so I had no idea of who the new characters (or actors) would be, so Ian Mcshane slowly stepping out of his cabin as Blackbeard was pretty awesome for me.

Overall worth seeing. I did not see it in 3d so not sure how much that might enhance it. Took me about 15 seconds to realize the fact that Jack Sparrow said "Missionary's position".

The first 20 minutes were great and felt like the charm of the first movie while adding something new. The rest of it was just okay. Meh. I couldn't really get into any of the new characters, their motivations, or the plot. I'm glad the movie is toned down from the ****-happening-everywhere of 2 and 3 but it felt like it was missing something.

I'm heading out in a few hours to see it with some friends. We're catching the afternoon showing in the hope of avoiding any big crowds.

I have to admit to a certain amount of childish glee from watching the PotC films, but mostly from the first one (I have to agree with Pommy on the "****-happening-everywhere" point), so I am really looking forward to number 4. I haven't even really got any idea what the plot of the movie is, which might be a first for me going into a cinema.

I read the novel a few years back, and I'm quite certain there were no mermaids. ಠ_ಠ

I really liked it. I did get a slight sense of it feeling a bit tired as a concept but it was definitely entertaining and pretty well acted. I'm almost sorry they left it rather open at the end though because I fear they're in danger of running the franchise into the ground.

Probably won't watch it for awhile. To be honest the third one turned me off because it was very long and just too much. Very much like the Star Wars prequels the battles just dragged on, you couldn't tell what was happeneding and you didn't really care.

That whole movie was cliche and silly.

and it was a lot of fun. Still not sure why Blackbeard needs a crew though >_>

Do people actually not know it's an adaptation of a novel? Do they not mention this in the opening credits?

Apparently it has virtually nothing to do with the novel other than searching for the fountain of youth and Blackbeard.

Oh, right, that book. :) I heard of it, but haven't had a chance to read it. I thought you were talking about one of the Pirates of the Caribbean novelizations. Yes, they exist...

However, my understanding was that the film was no more an adaptation of Tim Power's book than Monkey Island 2 was an adaptation of the Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland ride.

Most films today have very minimal opening credits. I wouldn't expect any movie to reference a book in the opening credits today. Having said that, I've found these films to be virtually unwatchable. Maybe someday I'll actually get through one in one sitting. I'll probably be hooked up to a colostomy bag at that point.

No Keira yes, but we do have Penelope Cruz.

I thought the movie was decent overall. The first act felt compelling with the Pirates charm being captured, but after that (mainly when Jack was on Blackbeard's ship), the pacing of the movie somewhere felt lacking. It's more so when the island is reached.

There's a romance plot that's really thrown in with characters you don't really care about. Why did Syrena suddenly help Jack recover the chalice? Him and Angela aren't exactly "good" characters so to speak . Come to think of it, the story is kind of weak overall. The action sequences somehow lack the excitement and tension from the first three. Most of the time it feels like a lot of random sword play.

On Stranger Tides is actually one of the major inspirations for Monkey Island, which is why I read it.
