Study: Sex-Selection Abortions Kill 12 Million Girls in India

I heard about this on a typical top of the hour news break on the radio today. A simple google search for "india gender selection" shows that the topic is far from recent news although the alarming statistic may be.

So how would you say Obama plays into this?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Since most feminists are pro-choice, that's easy to get upset at but difficult to get loud and all up in arms about without giving the nutjobs who bomb abortion clinics too much... ammunition ;). Also, it's not that shocking for that part of the world.

Obama's sister was aborted by his Indian parents.

Actually, the founders of the feminist movement are pro-life.
2011-05-24, 5:05 PM #7
I'm sure there are lots of pro-life feminists; I am just of the opinion that there are probably more pro-choice feminists than pro-life ones.

I wonder what homosexuality rates are in places that do this?

The most distressing thing about this is the fact that the mothers are too often held responsible (and sometimes forced) into the abortion, especially if she hasn't "given" the husband a son yet. This kind of occurrence isn't about a woman's right to choose, but about the archaic value of the persistence of a surname and all the baggage that goes with arranged marriages.

I don't imagine we will hear a peep out of him regarding women's issue from that part of the world.

I think most groups can't afford to voraciously object to matters from the region because that would draw attention to their champion politicians that ignore such things.

Article title: Study: Sex-Selection Abortions Kill 12 Million Girls in India

Actual text from the article: “The number of girls being aborted is increasing and may have reached 12 million with the lower estimate of 4 million over the last three decades,”

Sad nonetheless, but its interesting how statistics get twisted around in these kinds of articles.

Let me ask you the question you should all really be worried about:

What if JESUS was ABORTED?

I'm not at all surprised by any of this. As Wookie stated it has long been known that this was occurring on a large scale. I watched a documentary about this years ago but I can't remember what it was called. I know that a lot of people call this "Female Infanticide". The issue has very little to do with abortion & more to do with culture. It's rather unfortunate that women aren't valued in various cultures.
? :)

Yeah. It's pretty much common knowledge what the situation in China is like.

Can you even be aborted with a midichlorian count that high?

My impression was that the Chinese government cracked down it, and the areas that it only happens nowadays is in the rural areas outside of frequent government influence.

Government can only do so much to change a firmly ingrained set of cultural values.

If it were outside of the government influence it probably wouldn't happen so much.

Well, when you say a family can only have one child, and you need someone strong to work on the farm, a baby girl isn't exactly a boon.
Of course, everything about modern chinese history is full of "Well that was obvious in hindsight" moments like that. For example, telling farmers they should smelt steel rather than farm.

-How would I have fixed it? Not been a brutal dictator that people were afraid to even approach to give bad news to. That sort of thing just never works out in the long term.

I don't understand why we've shifted the discussion to China when the article/statistics were based in India. There are similarities between the cultural "reasons" for this "problem" but the differences are what are more interesting (e.g: India doesn't have a one child rule). This problem won't be resolved without a cultural shift. India is host to one of the oldest continuous civilizations on Earth so this is no easy task.
? :)

And while it would be an interesting socialogical study to see a country overbreed itself into poverty and implode, the end result and global consequences would be rather undesirable.

You know what else is worrying? The phrasing "the feminists are going to love this" as if it shouldn't be a concern for people who don't readily identify themselves as feminists.

You'd think that a new societal pressure would develop to have girls so that men could have a wife.

Are you kidding or do you think one's sexual orientation is definitely a choice?

We're talking about a country where dudes openly dance with other dudes in public, and everyone else is totally weird for finding their "culture" a little bit gay.

The sarcasm, which I think was obvious, was alluding to how abortion has become so sacrosanct to modern feminism and, in this case, is being used specifically to kill female fetuses.
