Yaaaaaaaaawn.

nope.

They announced Smash Bros coming to it and the 3DS simultaneously. So I will be getting it. Sigh.

Frankly, I don't have a problem with the console so much, especially since it uses the existing Wii controllers. My only concern is the price.

I am happy that they're returning to controllers that have an acceptable number of buttons and won't have to rely on waggling to do basic functions that should be mapped to buttons.

However, I wonder about how comfortable this thing will be to hold.

That new Star Wars game for the Kinect looks ... awful. Why not just please the fans and make Battlefront 3 or a new Republic Commando or a new Jedi Knight. I guess LucasArts really did lose their minds years ago.

Oh yuck, Engadget says the controllers are resistive touch. Stop being cheap, Nintendo!

This pretty much sums it all up for me as well

Also, why the hell would they use circle sliders instead of traditional analog sticks? While the one on the 3DS is great compared to the crappy one on the PSP, it still doesn't compare to a real analog stick. On a regular console controller, why does it matter if the analog stick adds a little extra height to the controller?

oh nice. An obese Wii.
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

I'm reserving judgement until my friend with too much money buys one so I can play with it hands on whilst drunk.

I'm thinking because Nintendo wants to show something that resembles a tablet as much as possible. You know, the things that the public is so familiar and infatuated with at the moment.

The original Wii's draw was that it allowed movement to be turned into input. Although its actual capabilities were shoddy at that at best, it framed a concept the average person could understand. So it sold, big time.

What are the hot new things these days? iPads. Smartphones that look like iPhones. eBook readers. Things that are tablets. So why not controllers that look like those?

But what are the specs on that thing (the main console that is)?

No specs yet. Really they just announced the controller, not the console. We will likely hear about the console itself at Tokyo Game Show.

So what I'm seeing is says no Gamecube backward compatibility? Goddammit.

If anything the controllers look like oversized Gameboy Advances. :P
nope.

The controllers look like a huge white GameGear. Quite frankly I'm not that impressed yet. Maybe when actual games are shown that make use great use of the extra screen (instead of for a map or inventory like some DS games) then I'll be interested. Either way, the controller looks uncomfortable to play with (forget fighting games with that thing) and I can only imagine that it won't be cheap. Based on the nature demo, I'm impressed by the graphics, but it's hardly more of an upgrade than an existing 360 or PS3 games. All the third party games shown so far seem to be mostly 360/PS3 ports that will be released this holiday season. I'll be curious to see the price and what Nintendo will do to improve online play.

Also, Wii U? I was expecting a total name change at least. I think Nintendo should have waited until the Tokyo game show to make an official announcement complete with more Wii U games designed specifically exclusively for that sytem.

I really don't know what it is, but I think that controller is the most hideous idea. I just don't know what it is in specific, but when I saw the image I just went ".......ugh......". Probably it's resemblance to the Game Gear

Is that a joke?

Dear console manufactures,

Your gimmicks (all of you) suck, and are not the reason I buy a console/play games.

Thanks.
2011-06-07, 4:45 PM #20
Seriously... watching the gameplay videos, what the hell. I don't play a console game to be the fifth guy that gets screwed and has to play a handheld instead.

This is so stupid, I bet it's a total bust for Nintendo.

I'm sure there's enough of a fanboy following that they'll break even, but they may not see the profits like they have in the past.

Dear finity5: we understand your concern, and are very sorry to hear that we will not have your money for our next product.

However, we feel that we must remind you that the best business model is the one that sells. I can assure you that if such products you deem "gimmicks" were as such to everyone, we would not make them.

Thanks, MicroSonDo

Guys the controller screen doesn't just mirror what would be on the TV. In the Zelda demo he's got the map screen and input buttons on the controller screen with the action taking place on the main monitor.

This console is a DS on steroids. And I ****ing love it.
2011-06-08, 5:35 AM #26
What sold me was actually the way they used the golf and baseball and tie-ins with previous Wii controllers/accessories. I still have my concerns, but my confidence that I will enjoy the system is strong.

There's a lot of technical aspects that concern me:

1. Overall price. They're selling a system with graphical capabilities that are at least comparable to the 360. That alone will jump the price. I can't fathom the console alone costing less than $250. Combined with this controller, I could easily see that price be $400 or more.
2. Is it possible, and do they intend people to have multiples of these controllers? I'm thinking no, but that could jack the price up even more.
3. What's the battery life on that controller? I'd assume it's rechargeable, but considering none of the Wiimotes are, that can't be guaranteed. Even a good tablet only lasts 10 hours with the screen on, so something smaller like this, with cheaper parts might not even last that long.
4. Durability? I imagine, besides price, that they used resistive touch in order to make a tougher screen. Still, considering the fiasco with broken TVs and wiimotes, I can't dare imagine how many of these controllers are going to get stepped on, dropped, smashed, thrown, etc.

It's just a shame that it's a Nintendo so we'll be playing updated versions of games they made in the 90s. :P
nope.

No but really there's not many new games for ANY console anymore. Indie development is where all the innovation is happening.

Genius.
2011-06-08, 4:47 PM #36

So if you break the controller, you need to buy a whole new console. Brilliant.
2011-06-08, 5:04 PM #37
One tablet controller only? I guess it's inevitable that the fifth guy get's stuck playing a handheld. I can't imagine that Nintendo would not make it possible to use more than one tablet for a multiplayer game eventually... otherwise the novelty will wear off far too fast.

Oh, but we already got suckered into buying it, so that's all that matters anyway.

You can't imagine? Seriously, it would be super expensive, and running two screens is already difficult enough for the system. Also, you do realize that "fifth guy" thing is only one of like 20 different examples they showed for the new console? You're doing a terrible job of critiquing.

Nintendo has done a pretty great job so far with innovation, so even though I'm a bit cautious with regards to the screen so far, it wouldn't surprise me if they do something great again
