Which Jedi Knight game was the greatest?
2011-06-18, 12:56 AM #1
Which Jedi Knight game, on a stand-alone basis, do you think was the most well made? Stand-alone as in, without mods, additional levels, etc. Consider it the way it was "at release". to make this fair for Dark Forces, multiplayer is also out of consideration. I'm not including Jedi Academy in the pool out of fairness, It's not a true "Jedi Knight", game (although I still think it's a good game).

For me I think Mysteries of the Sith is the greatest simply because out of the three it's the one I have the fondest memories of playing, has the most varied level architecture, and has an interesting story beyond "Kyle chases bad guys across galaxy, murders the **** out of anything in his way" I also loved the last third of the game and how it forced you to vary your strategy, instead of sequencer charging the hell out of the bosses.

I look forward to seeing the results.

E: I just realized it would make more sense for this to be "Which Dark Forces" game was the greatest, and then I forgot to add Jedi Outcast into the poll, Oh well it's just a poll :(

Jedi Knight.

It's the game of my adolescence. Kept my attention from age 12 to 18, and it is still to this day one of the better gaming experiences available. The levels are classic and forever burned into my mind's eye. Plus, full-motion video cutscenes..

Still.. Dark Forces was pretty awesome, and had original music that kicked butt. Plus, I totally have a boner for dark troopers. :P Except phase 1 dark troopers are scary as **** to a 10-year-old. Also, dianagas. Level 3 and level 5 scared the crap out of me. But I loved level 4. I dunno.. I was just too young to fully appreciate that game. Also, the fusion cutter is pretty much the awesomest weapon in any game ever.

I wonder how many people here can accurately draw out levels from these games, I'm willing to bet it's "A Lot"

Easily. Well, except for maybe level 9 and level 15. And, well.. 19. And the temple one.

Dark Forces. Most Star Wars-like of all the games, a great bunch of interesting locations and so forth. Which is why I'd really want for the Dark Forces Mod for JA to wrap up their work, the 6-level demo is friggin' awesome already.

However, I have to shout out a special mention for MotS which would be on the second place for me. It was one of the first computer games that I played and in fact, without the MotS demo I would have never got JK anyhow because the full version of MotS required JK. >_> JK does have a more fleshed out story but what I liked about MotS was that it always felt more tied into the Star Wars movies more strongly than JK was. MotS's story wasn't that special and it somewhat served more or less as a platform for introducing random SW canon elements for purposes like "hey btw remember the Hutts". But it also featured Mara Jade in a kickass role which will sadly remain underappreciated for all eternity.

I could go on forever but simply put I still think it's one of the best add-ons ever created for any computer game. I know a lot of people disagree with that (due to colored lighting and whatnot) but I know that at least Burrie out there will agree with me.

Of course, the results might have been different if I had played JK first but for some reason I get this feeling that I still would have preferred MotS to JK but of course this alternate scenario doesn't mean a thing. As for, JO and JA, I enjoyed (still do) those games a lot even though they felt quite limited in some regards. And the fast release of JA after JO made me think there'd be more and more Jedi games for the future but 8 years later I can't help but feel disappointed.

I never really played Dark Forces, as I was more interested in using lightsabers. As for vanilla singleplayer experiences, I'm not sure if I really cared for either JK or MotS all that much, but as for multiplayer, I still think I prefered JK over MotS for some illogical reason.

However, as far as vanilla goes, I actually prefer Jedi Academy the most, but that was not in your poll.

JK. I remember being utterly amazed by the demo, and the FMV cutscences in the full game were the cherry on top. Good game.

OMQ @ Baconfish! You haven't played them? HERETIC! Skin him alive! String him up by his thumbs! Drive him outta town!

Ahem.

For myself and my brother (from childhood to late adolescence we were practically best friends, doing everything together), there were four games that our gaming revolved around: Firefight, Caesar II, TIE Fighter, and Jedi Knight.

FMV cutscenes? Check. Epic story? Check. No less that SEVEN unique Dark Jedi? Check. Lightsabers and Force powers? Check. The completely awesome "Dark Emperor" ending? Check, check, CHECK!

It's possible that, had one of the other games in the series been our major childhood standby, that might've been our number one, but I kinda doubt it. Yes, JO and JA had better graphics, and were good games in their own right, but for my money, JK was king.

Unfortunately for those diehard Dark Forces series players on this site, my affections have since transferred to KotOR. :P

Jedi Knight for me. I can't remember if I ever played Mysteries all the way through.
2011-06-18, 11:58 AM #12
Where's the Jedi Outcast option? xD

I think Jedi Knight was the best as far as like puzzles and stuff goes. But the saber combat in JK2 was by far the best... liked it better than Academy even. JA's saber combat was just too over the top.

How can you stay here for so long and completely ignore the previous games? Steam sells them for like, 5 bucks. They aren't long games, MoTS takes me 5 hours, JK takes me ten, DF takes 7.

Partly because I've seen your endless threads about geting them to actually run on newer operating systems and partly because I really don't care. :P
nope.

Hard choice between JK and MotS but I think I'm going with MotS. I enjoyed the single player a lot more. I wish I could still play it on windows 7 though :-(

If you get the steam version you shouldnt have any issues. The biggest issue is getting it installed on a 64-bit OS since the installer is 16-bit, so you have to do it manually. If you get the steam version.. you need not worry about that.

I will once I get the splint off my left hand. I'd also like to get around to playing KOTOR; I don't know which I should do first.

Anakin - KotOR. Definitely KotOR. Best Star Wars game ever.

BRING ON THE DARK FORCES SERIES FANBOY HATE!

Ahem.

Baconfish - do you have an Intel chipset? I understand that KotOR doesn't do well, at least not without a lot of configuring, on those.

Storyline wise... JK

Gameplay wise... MotS

Overall feeling... MotS

So I voted MotS. MotS multiplayer just feels bigger and more exciting for some reason. I love both but given the chance I will take MotS over JK.

Jedi Knight is still, not only my favorite star wars game, but also one of my favorite pc games ever. Like everyone else I remember those games with a kind of nostalgic reverie. Its surreal thinking about the hours I spent as a 9 year old playing jk/mots both online and off. The zone will forever remain a great memory of my childhood. Embarking on those journeys that led into online gaming were my first, and without saying some of the best. As a youngster, the prospect of wielding a lightsaber with an array of force powers at my command seemed too good to be true. It was blind luck that led me to get that game in the first place. Being 8 or 9 at best buy with my grandfather and me randomly finding a Star Wars game and deciding to get it due to the fact that it also included and "extra" game: MotS. With its live action cutsceens! They were even diffrent at a certain point depending on your lightside/darkside prefrences!!! To this day games do not seem to come close to the grandeur of jk. Maybe its simply those little kid moments, where things just seem larger than life. Things now are dwarfed in comparison. Perhaps it has something to do with how small you are and how big your imagination is at the time.

A lot of things do look different when you're younger. You are smaller and often do have a greater sense of wonder. Still, JK was grand and epic in its scope: its story, its live-action cutscenes, its dark/light choices, its Force powers and lightsabers. I would LOVE to see a KotOR mod that does JK - that would be the awesomest game of all time.

Jedi Knight because of its superb level design. It had absolutely gigantic levels for its time. In fact, any modern game that isn't a free roaming environment probably has smaller maps than the average JK map.

In retrospect the large maps were somewhat ruined by the absurd running speeds that would make the muscles in any normal human being explode in six minutes.

i think the thing that made JK amazing for me was the first level in Nar Shaddaa, it really gave the feeling of actually being in the underbelly of a dank industrial city planet...thing. just the whole game really felt like you were IN the world of star wars.

edit-
yeah pretty much just what emon posted...

I'd plunge my force into Mara Jade's dark side, if you know what I mean.

I voted JK, of course. (Jan was hotter.)

Jedi Knight.

First game I ever bought for the PC was the JK/MotS box set, I had actually bought it before i got my computer!

Best fun was taking out Jedi with a blaster on hard, wasn't advisable but that's what made it fun :)
