Tiered Data Pricing
2011-06-23, 6:43 AM #1
So now Verizon is going the tiered data rate path. Am I alone in thinking that if they allowed Unlimited before at $30/month that that should be the top price for the highest allowed cap?

Why can't plans run in acceptable, understandable rates?
Another example that boggles my mind is Texting numbers for Verizon, $5 for 250, $10 for 500, and yet for just double that I can get 5000 texts for $20. How the **** can they get away with that math?

Needless to say, for reasons other than this I'm changing plans in August when mine's up.

What a ripoff, while I'm not getting any real deals at sprint, they certainly aren't trying to play games.

Yeah, the top plan should be 30 or 40. I'm okay with tiered plans if they are reasonable. Verizon has always had some of the most absurd pricing plans. Their text plans are insulting. They get away with it because their network is so damn wide that people are willing to pay out the ass for it.

See T-Mobile for an example of tiered data done correct. You get data in 200 MB, 2 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB with a $10 gap between each one. The 500 minutes/2 GB data plan is $70/mo. Texting is unlimited. And when you go over, there's no charge, you just get Edge speeds instead. Too bad T-Mobile doesn't have great coverage in most areas. Their network is amazingly fast. 3G is 6-7 Mbps and 4G is 22 Mbps.

they do the tiered data pricing based on average usage statistics... usually resulting in that average usage level being the tier that is closest to the price of the unlimited plan

and verizon is not known for pricing that makes sense

Don't be dumb. You get grandfathered in. You'll keep your unlimited/$30/m.

I pay 33$/month for unlimited calling texting and data if I stay in my city or one of the other zones supported by my carrier. I can roam anywhere (in Canada) and get standard Rogers pay as you go rates.

Yeah Sprint's plans are astounding. What's your corporate discount? I had 22% and it wouldn't be THAT cheap for me. Closer to 80.

With Sprint you get can 450 anytime minutes with unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7 PM and unlimited calling to ANY cellular phone on ANY network, unlimited text and data all for $70. Amazing. Make that $80 if you want 4G but still reasonable.

Telus doesn't offer unlimited at all, I have to look into switching to mobilicity.

I do have the 450 minute/unlimited everything else but I'll never use 450 minutes a month so I just say unlimited everything. Just peeked at my bill and it's actually $68/month after 27% corporate discount.

If I wasn't grandfathered in to my unlimited AT&T price, I would get rid of my smart phone. It's the biggest waste of time and money, and I wish I had never got one and just kept my ipod and my phone two separate devices. Literally the only thing I like about my iPhone 5 is that the UI is better than the generic phones that take me 10 minutes to enter one contact into. As soon as there are low end touch phones that work with pre-paid minutes and some unlimited text package (for the girlfriend), I'm jumping ship. I'd rather spend money on laptop/PC processing power than my phone. Besides work-specific Apps, are there really any apps that "do" anything useful? I use google maps primarily, and everything else is a toy. I can imagine lots of practical uses for phones that are already being done places, like using it as a wallet or ID card, but none of this has been adopted yet.

Virgin Mobile has 300 minutes with unlimited text and data for $25/mo with no contract. The only catch is that you have to use their phones. They have a couple decent Android phones... Nothing amazing, but good god for $25/mo? Unbelievable. Uses Sprint's network. This is amazing for casual users... I'm trying to get my dad on it, he's still paying $25/mo for 120 minutes with no text or data on some ridiculously ancient Verizon plan.

actually they have one decent android phone (optimus), one disappointing android phone (intercept), and in about a month they'll come out with a nice android phone (triumph)

then there's a blackberry and a couple featurephones

From what I read online, they also apparently have a data usage cap of 5.5GB, despite what it says there.

Also, using Sprint's network is nice and all, but you don't have any roaming whatsoever, which can be problematic.

5.5 GB is still fantastic. Probably no data roaming though.

You have to have roaming to get data roaming :P

OH I thought you meant they don't have DATA roaming. That sucks.

I'm getting grandfathered in on the unlimited plan, and my plan is to begin streaming music and video as much as possible (and simultaneously, when technologically possible).

Indeed. I just made the switch to Verizon and have unlimited data, so I don't really care all that much.
