i feel sorry for anyone who recently paid for the game

and hey valve... could we stop with the distractions and give us SOMETHING about half life... at this point i don't care if it's HL2E3, HL3, HL:The Movie, HL: The Comic Book, HL: The Flamethrower just anything to continue the story i say everyone at valve should be forced to eat gabe newell's fat if they don't give us something more than "hang in there"
eat right, exercise, die anyway

I think anything free is cool but with TF2 I have to think Valve pretty much achieved market saturation. Almost anyone who had even a remote interest in the game owned it by now. Still a great deal for 'new' gamers tho, I'll be installing this on my niece and nephew's computers for sure.

Isn't Team Fortress an FPS? What makes it stand out?
2011-06-24, 5:21 AM #5
I bought this with the Orange Box ages ago but have only logged a couple of hours. It's hard for NOOBS like me (even relatively experienced FPS players) to get into because everyone else appears to have unlocked extra weapons and items as well as having had hundreds of hours to get to know the maps.

What I did find however was that the community were staggeringly helpful and kind over my NOOBishness, but it's still hard to feel at ease when you're getting panned.

And as it happens, I spent most of my time as a Medic, and did pretty well I thought :)

Is anything that can be labeled with a genre necessarily unoriginal or something?
2011-06-24, 6:07 AM #7
I feel bad, because I had my buddy who got Portal free on his new computer buy the Orange Box, which didn't give him a second free copy of portal, and now he learns that TF2 is free. I was going to give him my extra HL2 and he could have just bought Ep1 and 2 and saved some money.

That said, I called this like 2 years ago. You really don't need items to stay competitive, as I proved by playing a bit on his brand new account and still completely dominating people with the base guns, but I worry that this free to play model will make paid items just a bit more useful. They always seem to make the sniper overpowered when they release a sniper weapon, and then they nerf it a few months later to where the original becomes more useful again.

It's a team FPS that doesn't suck. Basically the difference is that it's still fun after you play for more than 5 minutes.

A. There's offline mode if you want to get to know how to play without embarrassing yourself.
B. The default weapons for every class are rather good on their own. Custom weapons drop OFTEN, so much so that they're considered "junk". If you're starting off, ask around on servers for anything specific you need. Oftentimes people will just GIVE you it. And if you can't find it, you can usually craft it with other junk you already found.
C. Start off by playing classes that don't require a lot of technical skill to be awesome at. Engineer, Medic, Sniper, even the Heavy sometimes are easy to just pick up and play.
D. Play on an instant respawn server. You can screw up a LOT more on those servers, and no one will be the wiser. Competition is a lot more fierce on those, but on the other side of the coin, you'll spend a lot more time actually playing, so you will learn faster.

Yeah, TF2 isn't 'just' another shooter in my book. Even as new games are coming out, I always run back to it.

TF2 multiplayer is possibly more fun than any game of JK you ever played.

Bright, colourful, interesting aesthetics, well balanced classes, good use of humour, FUN, the fact that it isn't brown-filtered spacemarines, etc.

The absence of grenades confused me at first, but I guess if the player movement speed is lower, then grenades would turn it all into a horrible spamfest.

Where is Half-Life 2: Episode 3?

Can we get some closure on that story already?

Can we?

Awesome. I've been playing on 360 for so long because I didn't want to repurchase a game I already had, but everyone on XBL is so painfully terrible.

I thought they released L4D2 in like 1 year or so to prove that they could actually release something in time, and even then people complained. Or maybe that was just a crackpot theory. Hell, I dunno.

The console versions of TF2 are awful in general. They're basically unpatched, there's a ton of bugs and exploits in it. You get NONE of the new content (there's like, 20 new maps, 60 new weapons, hats, game modes, etc). It's almost a completely new game now.

Yeah, I've watched all the updates roll out, and for awhile I hoped we'd be getting them too, eventually. Frustrating.

Well, I do kinda miss TF2 back in those early versions due to the simplicity. That's what hooked me into the game; everything felt tight and easy to comprehend.

I haven't played TF2 in a while, but, by the looks of it, it had blossomed into a monstrosity. I left after the Engineer Update due to work/study. A lot of these new weapons seem like statistical tweaking of other weapons (percentage increase/decrease of this and that), not so much opening up a new playstyle (like the Huntsman, etc.).

I still play all the time, mostly with the original weapons and I still kick butt. I'm sorta stubborn I wont alter my gameplay even to earn achievements. I've never purchased anything at the Mann Store. Same policy with the drop items. I never craft things, mostly because figuring out what I need to combine to make something cool is too much trouble. Every so often I give away all the crap I accumulate.

The only items I use are the soldier's set, because self-healing is awesome and sentries suck.

Every other class I pretty much play vanilla while wearing a rudely-named hat.

Most achievements can be earned without doing anything special anyway. But as far as crafting goes, why not? Seriously, there's a huge wiki that states exactly what you need to craft to make anything you want. You don't need to figure anything out. Some of the weapons are really nice (the wrangler for engi, the sword/shield for demo, the kritzkrieg for medic, and definitely the degreaser+flare gun+axetinguisher for pyro). The original weapons are still good, but I find some new weapons fit my playstyle far better. Many of the weapons require playing in a different manner, which you may find you like.
