I just got a conditional offer for Cambridge!! The conditions are:

A in Mathematics
A in Further Mathematics
B in another subject (I'm predicted A in computing and B in chemistry)

Grade 1 and grade 2 in STEP II and III

So I'm well chuffed!! Anybody here done the STEP and wanna tell me what I'm in for?

Oh BTW that's to study Maths with Computing at Clare College.

Heh. Well done.

/me realises this means a lot more to Brits than anyone else.

My sister is hoping to get one from Roehampton, but she'd be happy with Cambridge too.

Yeah, but you know what? This one, this one right here, this was my dream, my wish, and it didn't come true. So I'm takin' it back. I'm takin' 'em all back.

I want to go to Cambridge... I'm in a Grammar School just finishing my GCSE course (exams in the Summer) and I'm choosing my A-Levels at the moment - time will tell. My girl and I would love it though if we could end up at the same Uni together, even though I'm two years older... would be funny if it happened. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I do know that people who can get 100% in Further Mathematics in their sleep can flunk a STEP paper.

Basically STEP is nothing like the type of questions you get on normal maths exam, in fact you may find that since your teachers have been doing exam style maths for so long that they'll struggle as well.

The only trick to STEP is to do every past paper you can get your hands on. The second thing you have to do is have Warwick as your second choice because Cambridge are very rarely generous about people not meeting reqirements (in Maths particularly).

Well done so far [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Congrats!
As everyone knows, Clare College is the finest college in all of Cambridge [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Eralc and I graduated from there last summer.

The Computer Science course at Cambridge is really interesting, but you'll only do half of it in the first year. Are you planning to go on with the Maths or the Computing? The theoretical CS courses in the later years are good - they're like Applied Pure Maths, if that makes any sense.

Good luck with your A-levels!

Chris

Well done! I'm so jealous - Clare is a fab college and I'd love to be back as an undergraduate again!

I can't give you any help with STEP papers myself (I did Natural Sciences, and so I didn't have to do them). Clare are quite generous with the whole not quite meeting the grades thing though - I just missed one of the grades I needed, and still got in.

Good luck with the A-levels and stuff. Hope it all goes well!

I will of course be doing loads of practice papers, I also got past the qualifying round of the Senior Maths Challenge (but then completely flunked the next one [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]) and those questions weren't anything like exam questions. The questions at the interview are the sort of things I'm expecting in the step, things like summing series like 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + ... (it sums to infinity).

I'm pleased to know that there are people here who went to Clare college; I didn't get to see all of it at my interview - is it all grey?

Cambridge interview questions are to be honest... very easy. The only reason an applicant should get them wrong is by being too nervous to think straight. The whole interview stage is to see if you are suited to the cambridge academic style (which is supposed to be completely different to the majority of other universities.

STEP questions are weird in that at first glance they look like normal exam questions (ie same format) but when you actually start thinking about the problem you realize it's slightly more complex than you originally thought it should be.
