Need a commercial
2011-07-26, 11:04 PM #1
The acting workshop I'm in right now is in an acting for the camera series.

I need to work on a commercial but i am having trouble locating one suitable. Needs to be a monoluge type deal (not a voiceover or playing charades).

I was considering http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63Zgt7WdN6w for levitra but it's not necessarily age appropriate (despite my dick not working) so I need ideas. Ideally something I could theoretically be cast in.

Any ideas? ~30 seconds. I will let you guys see the result of my rehearsals.

If you think the waiters are rude, you should see the manager.

Haha, that did cross my mind. I'm not sure if that is the direction I want to go since his character isn't strictly speaking selling anything. I think the class also wants me to get away from the cyborg killer vibe, since that seems to be my default character.

I will totally keep it in mind though, thanks for reminding me.

Would this one be too obvious and/or hard?

This one might give more acting fun (the narration is relatively short at the beginning and end) but it might also still be too psychotic and not directly selling anything himself:

I guess if you're avoiding the cyborg killer type, this wouldn't do? (it's also about 30 seconds too long)

Last one, I promise. I thought it'd be amusing to try and act out the guy at the podium:

They actually advertise drugs and stuff on tv over there?

The most you get on tv here is paracetemol and cough medicine.
nope.

We need to know about the drugs so we can demand our doctor prescribe them for us. How do you guys get any good drugs? Do you just have to trust your doctor to know you need them?

lol, Geb, how much caffeinehave you had? All interesting examples but I think I will choose something a little less...psychotic than most of those to have on a very basic acting reel.Though I could definitely be cast as the Jim Carey type, so I guess something psycho does need to go on there.

Haha, none! I just got my brain racking on ideas when I saw this thread before I went to sleep, but as you saw, most of the stuff I could recall was of the more disturbing kind of thing. Personally, I think your examples are far too boring and don't show much though. I think the Old Spice one shown would be good.

I'd suggest seeing if you can dig up some commercials from the 80s or before, since they tend to have more sell-y, monologue-type ads that aren't as random as more modern commercials.

Geb I agree with you. However, the purpose of this assignment (I think, my instructor is a little zen about some assignments) is to become comfortable playing a commercial role as I would be cast. My looks seat me decidedly in the college student arena at this point, and so I'm trying not to stray too far from that.

Now, my looks for a narrative piece are much more flexible, I think you've maybe seen the video of my in drag, and we will be doing character pieces, but if someone is casting a commercial, they will probably not even watch my slate (hi, my name is...) let alone my audition, unless I match what they are looking for. And if my audition comes way out of left field from where my looks sit at, I'm not getting the job.

That's what Ive been finding frustrating is finding something interesting, that I could also conceivable be case for by an agency. Unfortunately, the people doing casting are a little lacking in imagination. However, I asked a random girl at school and she said 'Macs' and all of the strangers around us agreed, so I will probably go that direction. But I'm going to rehearse my version of the Old Spice one too in case I feel, well, spicy right before we shoot the commercial.

Aha, things are more clear now. Well, if it's anything like having an online portfolio (that is, able to display more than one 'work'), having the 'safe' typecast-ish one is definitely out in front, but at least a second, "here's showing some range" piece would be good too. But then again, I know jack about how this particular field works, so it's best just to take what I say with a grain of salt.

This assignment would be a lot easier if you weren't stuck with a monologue. I still think older commercials will be your best bet from the sound of things. The only thing that rolls off my mind for modern "college student" monologue-ish (song) commercial is something like this:
Sorry, don't know how to play this video :(

I doubt that'll work for your sort of assignment though, so I think at this point I'll just wish you luck unless I feel I'm struck with the idea equivalent of gold.

Geb: Doesn't know what the term "writer's block" means.

Unfortunately, I don't watch much TV, so I can't really contribute.

Haha maybe I will take my guitar in for it. Special skills are gold? But the typecasting...

There is one where he jumps into a hot tub and then it disappears and he is on a motorcycle and he builds you a kitchen...
