It costs a lot of money to operate a spam bot.

I know it's cheap and easy, but what's the point of spamming this place at all? Nobody here is going to fall for that crap.

The point isn't to get us to click the links, it's just to get the links out there and have them associated with the sites. This boosts their PageRank on google.

Not exactly, but close. More links can help boost rankings in SERPs (search engine results pages), but most forums tag links as rel=nofollow which means they don't help at all (I just checked, apparently Massassi doesn't do this.)

What's more often going on is that they're trying to build up keywords. Google sees a link and looks at the text around it, or the anchor text, to see what the link is talking about.

Example:
Click here to find out more about <a href="http://www.zaccohn.com">Butt enlargement!</a>

In the above example, "butt enlargement" is the anchor text. So google crawls the page, sees a link to X site with Y anchor text, and makes a little note that if someone is searching for butt enlargement, this page should show up.

[edit- This is also why you never want "click here" to be the anchor text, because that does doodly squat for you in terms of SEO.]
