DOSbox 0.74 - From X-wing to X-com
2011-08-04, 5:47 PM #1
I just got Dosbox0.74 to try and play some of my old pc games. Among them being x-wing x-com rebel assault 1 and 2 age of empires, and most importantly jedi knight. If anyone has the time, please help me to get these games working on my windows 7 64bit. IM stuck here:

5. Switch to the D: drive & install game (to C[file:///C:/Users/DARTHJ~1/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_image001.gif]:
C:\>D:

Have a look at the files w/the dir command & see if there is an install/& a setup program/whatever the command to start the installation is called. Check the game’s Manual/Installation Guide for exact command to use.

D:\>dir /w
D:\>install
6. Configure sound & graphics:
A safe bet when configuring sound is to select General MIDI/SoundBlaster. Don't try stuff like Gravis Ultrasound (GUS)/Adlib. If asked about details on IO/IRQ/DMA/High DMA addresses when configuring game to use SoundBlaster, use IO=220, IRQ=7, DMA=1/High DMA=5).

I see dosbox telling me all the files (jedi.exe etc.) but try as i may, this seems to come to no avail every time, please help me Massassi, i wanna play TODOA really bad...

You're trying to run Jedi Knight, a Windows game, on a DOS emulator. That's not going to work.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

See my sig, and uhh.
Jedi Knight ain't gonna work on dos mang.

There's a sticky thread on the forum you're currently posting on that will help you to get Jedi Knight running in Windows 7. You also wouldn't use DOS to run any of the Age of Empire games either. I never had the pleasure of playing any of the Star Wars flight sims so I'm going to assume that you're correct in assuming that they were indeed DOS games (a simple Wikipedia search should tell you which OS's are compatible).

Although people are making (slow and poor) progress getting Voodoo support, and better win9x support, into dosbox.

Speaking of DOSbox, I recently got TIE Fighter working. The joystick took forever to get working. Although it was worth it, I can't believe I loved this clunky **** as a kid.

i play tie fighter and x-wing without dosbox some how, i remember pirating it long ago and i dont recall how it works
2011-08-05, 7:31 AM #12
A version of X-wing was released for windows. It works fine on win7; the version of tie-fighter released with it does not. X-wing alliance probably works just fine.
Age of Empires runs on everything. The menus might have corrupted palettes on win7, but the game itself runs perfectly.
I don't know anyone would want to play Rebel Assault.

Yeah, im sorry for being a noob massassi. I was just got soooo frustrated that I lost the will to try and thus came to this conclusion. Collectively here (at massassi) we probably know everything. SO yeah... iSuck ( the new iWeiner)

So should i attempt still to load old games like x-wing, rebel assault, kings quest IV, so on, in dosbox? Or is this mostly used for ppl downloading the rom and using it to play?

Sorry again for my ignorance, but if there was one place i knew i could get answers (specify: CORRECT answers), it was massassi....

1,000 pardons again.

Did anyone ever try this TIE Fighter TC for XWA?

Considering I already have your attention, exactly where do iplace the mods and such i have downloaded. i have Todoa as well as jedi discovery an "unofficial patch 08" ogel's city...

I see a .goo(?) ogels and .gob for the patch and ajd , but todoa is a .rar file. IM not sure if i need to change (or if i did already and don't remember)

I also downloaded jkdirect play. Where do i put this file. I got the ddraw.dll for the cd acceleration and i suppose after extraction i just put it in the jediknight folder i made.

Also, i have my mots disc, do i need any of those files?

RAR is a container similar to ZIP, extract the files and read the manual.

Yeah, i guess my disc must be ****ed up or something because it wont let me copy and paste all the files in the gamedata/resources/video. When i try you can hear the disc stop spinning and just sit and wait not doing anything. I copied everything else from the disc and everything from disc two, but a few of those files from the first disc are just not budging.

Thanks for everyone's help. Ive just been spending way too long on something so trivial its enraging.

Haha... I love how we're just asking stupid questions instead of using google and now we're just openly talking about pirating software.

You should get Outlaws while you're at it. That game was a ton of fun & it's hilarious playing it multiplayer.

ut, my suspicions were confirmed. My disc is toooooo scratched. I was doing this manually, and some of the files in the video folder would not copy. Those same files were what stopped the above installer completing the setup.

Now what do i do? Anyone have said files? Wanna hook me up?

After being unable to get jk to install, i tried MotS. This was a complete success! Afterthat i tried, yet again to get jk to work. I cannot undo the irreversible scratches on y disc, but i can exclude the files that were causing the problem from instillation. I can now play jk, but my drive starts making crazy noises and the game stops and everything when it ties to bring up a vid's. If anyone does have those files and can give them to me this MAY solve the problem i hope.

My next priority is to play todoa. Ive extracted all the files from the patch that is needed. Now i cannot get the patch to work. With patchcommander not working on my pc and thrying to type into run : "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\JediKnight\add -path add" (add being the name of the file ive placed all extracted info from the patch) and my pc tells me it cannot find it.... What am i doing wrong?

Addidionally, if i wanted to download several addons (as i have) do i always put them in the episode folder? do i make seperate folders for every addon manually? I tried putting the files in with jk.exe and using bspatch.exe.... no luck. What gives?

Not only have i got jk and mots running, but i got ogles city workin for mots and i got todoa and the 3 jedi discovery installments. Im ecstatic, this is amazingly gratifying, playing an old game i mean. Its truly wonderful.

In todoa, when the initial starwars scrolls down and everything its super big and you cant see the rest. Is all the text ****ed up on mine for a reason? Goddamn tho, this has to be the coolest mod for any game ever built, its pretty much its own game. I cannot believe the level of detail put into this. Its truly blowing me away.

Mentat mentioned outlaw earlier. I remember that game, though i played it when i was 10 or so. Its pretty awesome for an old west game. Im surprised noone said anything about x-com. Noone? Age of empires (first one) i didnt even try yet, i just assumed it would be a pain in the ass. I have an ulitima pc game i never played, perhaps its time to give it a shot.

Ive been super excited about playing all these old outdated games. Its pretty awesome.

If anyone wants to play some jk, you know where to find me....

And if you don't : darth_xasthur@gmail.com & heavy_goth_rock@yahoo.com

I remember waaaaaaay back in the day playing Age of Empires 2 on my grandfather's ****ty computer. I was no good at games back then so I'd just spawn all the laser-wielding future soldiers along with the "BigMomma" black car or whatever.

I remember distinctly having just legions of these guys, pressing fire, and it would bring the computer to it's knees.

Yes, and aside from a technical issue or two, it's pretty sweet.
